My name is Candace, and I am a 43-year-old resident of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. I worked as a cashier for over 20 years. Approximately three years ago, I was forced to leave my position due to an inability to stand for extended periods.

After leaving my job, I attempted to support myself through Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash. However, my medical conditions have progressed to the point where driving for long periods is no longer safe. Due to severe peripheral neuropathy, I have limited sensation in my feet and am unable to reliably feel the pedals.

In 2020, I developed chronic Epstein-Barr syndrome, which resulted in severe peripheral neuropathy. In 2022, I was also diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma on my nose, requiring surgical removal followed by reconstructive plastic surgery. The financial burden of these procedures completely depleted my resources. As a result, I can no longer afford additional medically necessary surgeries or treatments, including those required for my neuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome. I was scheduled to undergo surgery on both arms last December but was unable to proceed due to the cost.

In addition to my physical health challenges, I require ongoing mental health services and extensive dental care. Although I have insurance, the copays for these treatments are prohibitively expensive.

I am currently unable to work full time and struggle even with part-time employment. My work is seasonal and provides little to no income from September through April each year. I also have an ongoing disability case that has been pending for over two years. Despite multiple attempts over the past six years and retaining legal representation in February, the case continues to move slowly due to government cutbacks.

I have sought financial assistance through charities and churches without success. Unfortunately, my family and friends are not in a position to provide financial support. Additionally, I serve as a part-time caregiver for my mother-in-law, who is battling dementia. To fulfill this role, I need to be physically and mentally well, yet I am currently functioning at approximately 40% capacity in both areas.
