Mike Reeves blessed countless people during his life. This campaign is an opportunity to bless his family in return, now that he has passed.
Mike and his wife, Earlene, spent their lives in service of others and of Christ. Mike had a zeal for life and a mission to leave the world better than he found it. He deliberately greeted each day with a smile and a song and made it his mission to encourage all he met.
Beginning his professional life as a school teacher in Arkansas, Mike and his wife Earlene have always had a heart for students and kids. Over the years, the Reeves opened their home to many students. Mike had a gift for reaching teenagers and teaching them the hope found in Christ during times of turmoil. He was a rock in the storms of life, eventually transitioning into full-time youth ministry. In addition to hosting decades worth of youth groups, Mike and Earlene adopted fostered countless children and adopted four children (in addition to their three biological children) in their years together, with the most recent still living at home. In ministry, the Reeves worked with churches in Fayetteville and Russellville, Arkansas; Dalton Gardens, Idaho; Prineville, Oregon; and Grand Island, Nebraska.
In late 2016, Mike was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of lung cancer. He was undergoing treatment at St. Francis Cancer Treatment Center in Grand Island, Nebraska when he passed away on February 28, 2017.
Most of us have known someone who has battled cancer; the fight involves much more than surviving the physical treatment. Many families go bankrupt attempting to cover medical expenses that exceed even the best insurance as well as the many other non-medical expenses that add up. In Mike's case, he had undergone a full round of radiation therapy, one session of chemotherapy, before passing away in the hospital after a week-long stay in ICU.
Mike did his best to provide for his family and ensure they would be looked after upon his passing, but living a life of service and ministry often comes with the sacrificial cost of financial means.
This campaign is an opportunity for those of us who have been blessed (directly or indirectly) by the Reeves family to return the favor. These funds will go directly to Earlene for costs that resulted from Mike’s cancer, end-of-life expenses, and the keeping of his family (Earlene and their youngest son, Jeremiah).
“Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches … and let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”
(Galatians 6:6, 9f)
Speaking personally, we would not be the men we are today if it were not for the investment Mike and his family made in our lives. There are not words, good deeds, or funds enough to repay all the good that has sprouted from his encouragement over the years, but this is a start. We would like to raise a sizeable "thank you offering” for Mike's family within the next three months (through June 2017).
If you have been blessed by the Reeves family, if you were one of their many tag-along kids in the youth group, or if you were blessed by someone connected to the Reeves family, please give to this campaign as you are able.
Thank you for reading! Please feel free to contact either of us with any additional questions.
Sincerely and thankfully,
