The Rhoads family has suffered from two tragedies. Gabby Rhoads suffered from cancer and the side effects of chemo and radiation. Kevin and Gabby’s oldest son, 11 year old Andrew, was diagnosed with Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation type 1A (CDG 1A), a disease that causes, among many other symptoms, loss of vision. CDG only affects 400-800 people worldwide, with Andrew’s type being the rarest. Andrew himself is the oldest person with CDG 1A, as most children afflicted die within one year.
Unable to continue working, Gabby, Andrew and youngest son Jacob, relied on Kevin’s job at NASA, yet the financial pressure built up. Gabby was six months without cancer and it looked like she was going to beat the cancer. She was planning to return to work, when unexpectedly Gabby passed away on the morning of June 22, 2017 at the age of 31.
