Filmprojekt in Kolumbien mit den Wayúu

Hallo,

Hello,
we are Paul, Micha and Jannik. Throughout March 2022 we will be making a participatory documentary in Colombia, more precisely in the desert region of La Guajira, with the local Wayúu, the largest indigenous population group in Colombia.
We want to make different realities of life visible and at the same time accompany our partners in practicing audiovisual communication.

Who are the Wayúu?

With around 380.000 people, the Wayúu form the largest indigenous ethnic group in Colombia and they are among the poorest. They have been living on the La Guajira peninsula for over 2000 years. With traditional handicrafts that have been passed on for over 14 generations, the women produce, among other things, the popular Wayuu bags (mochilas) in days of manual labour. While a mochila sells for more than 50€ in the Global North, the makers receive far less than 10€ per bag.
Anthropogenic droughts make life in the semi-desert increasingly difficult. Yet the region is rich in raw materials like coal and natural gas. However, large corporations such as Deutsche Bahn are the main beneficiaries of the multi-billion dollar coal business.
This is a global injustice that must therefore also be addressed globally. This also includes media visibility.

That's why we want to give as many people as possible an authentic impression of the situation of the Wayuu with a documentary film and the distribution via social networks. We don't want to film our ideas, but rather develop and implement a project together with some local people. We are already in contact with several people from La Guajira.

What do we have in mind?

In February 2021, Micha visited the region of La Guajira. This visit and the contact with the Wayuu had an impressive effect on his view of globalisation, education, social inequality, culture and identity.
For this reason, he would like to do filmic research for his bachelor thesis on the topic: "Digital participation and self-presentation of indigenous people in the dominant majority society".
It is particularly important for us to develop and show a perspective with the Wayuu. So that the Wayuu can have a say in what is filmed and how, or film it themselves.

There are already individuals and organisations that support us.
Through the Deutsch-Kolumbianischer-Freundeskreis e.V., we were able to find a local Wayúu contact person who recently gave us permission for the film project. For example, the DKF  (NL Rheinland Ruhr) has schools built in La Guajira, where the children can be taught by Wayúu teachers.
The Fundación Apünaja  is an NGO in Colombia that itself works with some Wayúu in La Guajira and among other things, campaigns for the rights and education of the families there. The donation-based Fundación is also regularly supported by volunteers from Europe and North America.

How will the donations be used?

The collected donations are used to support the involved local organizations and individuals, as well as for the purchase or rental of technology and for travel and accommodation expenses.
