Filmmaking Course Support

Hiya! I’m a self-taught multidisciplinary artist whose practice intersects music, writing, photography, videography, and installation. I’ve also worked as a project manager for the past six years.

In January 2024, I sustained a concussion that has taken over a year to recover from. The severity of my symptoms forced me to quit my job, and it’s been difficult to re-enter that line of work due to its demanding pace and intensity. Securing grants has also been incredibly challenging as an early career artist with no connections in the field.

Although I had to spend all my savings to give myself the time and space to heal, this break allowed me to realign with my artistic practice and define a clearer path forward. I’ve recently been accepted into the Experimental Filmmaking course in Berlin, which I believe will be a crucial step in advancing my career.

As Dr. Jennifer DeClue emphasises, experimental cinema plays a vital role in the (de)construction of identity and the disruption of the colonial gaze - an approach still urgently needed in how African, Black, and diasporic stories are told. This course is a rare opportunity for me to deepen both my technical and conceptual skills, particularly in archival filmmaking, and to further develop my work as a director, researcher, editor, and collaborator.

After the course I plan to develop my on-going archive based visual project, using African-Lusophone archives to reimagine colonial narratives.

This step, while essential, is not something I can fund on my own. So I’m reaching out to the community - those who understand the resilience it takes to sustain a creative career through uncertain and difficult times.
