The Madagascar Water Project (MWP) has been drilling water wells in rural villages in Madagascar since 2015. It is a registered non-profit in both the United States and Madagascar.

With two fully equipped drilling rigs, MWP drilled 53 wells in 2024, bringing clean water to 39,000 people in some of the most difficult and inaccessible areas in Madagascar. Today, 180,000 people get their water from an a well or project built by the Madagascar Water Project. Unlike other NGOs, the MWP maintains and repairs every well it drills, now numbering about 225.

Last week the US government cut funding for the US Agency for International Development. USAID is the biggest funder of water, health, education and other projects in Madagascar. The elimination of USAID’s contribution to the water crisis will leave an enormous gap and will result in many hundreds or even thousands of unnecessary deaths in Madagascar.

The Madagascar Water Project has realigned its priorities to help fill the gap in the most vulnerable areas. MWP will operate two rigs in southern Madagascar this year. One will be dedicated to rehabilitating the many hundreds of broken wells, and the second to drill new wells where water is desperately needed. The water is used for drinking, cooking, washing and other WASH-related activities and very importantly, agriculture and farming.

It costs about $1500 to clean out an old well and install an Indian Mark III hand pump and a new drill well costs about twice that much. Each well instantly serves many hundreds of people that suffer every day from a lack of water and food.

We need your help…..the People in Rural Madagascar need your help. This level of operations requires more funds than we normally see in contributions. If we are fully funded, MWP has the capacity to drill or repair 150 wells in rural villages that have no water at all, potentially impacting the lives of 100,000 people and saving dozens from death by disease and starvation.
