Filipino Curriculum Project

The Filipino Curriculum Project (FCP) is a student-driven initiative based in Hawai‘i focused on designing and integrating Filipino history and culture into Hawai‘i's schools in collaboration with educators.

 

Filipinos are the largest Asian ethnic group in Hawai‘i. More than 25% of the population in Hawai‘i, a quarter of Hawai‘i's people, identify as full Filipino or part Filipino. 24% of Hawai‘i's public school students are also Filipino. But despite being a majority, there is a clear lack of Filipino representation in Hawai‘i's education. Filipino students want their history and culture to be seen and celebrated in what we are learning. Having representation is critical in strengthening students' ethnic identities, connections, awareness about the diversity of the community, and self-worth.

FCP aims to empower the Filipino community by ensuring curriculum representation through student activism. For over four years, Filipino students and educators have worked together to develop and advocate for a trailblazing social studies course, "Filipino History Culture,” or CHR 2300.

This course, which was approved by the Hawai‘i Department of Education (HIDOE) in 2023, is focused on Filipino history, culture, and identity. The student collaborators in this initiative are devoted to fostering Filipino empowerment and representation, addressing the lack of such experiences in our educational journeys. Today, our efforts have grown to include students from across Hawai‘i, advocating for the offering of our course in as many schools as possible.
