Filipino Curriculum Project

We're a group of Filipino high school students who are working towards designing and integrating Filipino history and culture into Hawaii's public schools through a student-led curriculum.

 

Filipinos are the largest Asian ethnic group and non-white group in the state of Hawaii. More than 25% of the population in Hawaii --a quarter of Hawaii's people-- identify as full Filipino or part Filipino. 23% of Hawaii's public school students are also Filipino. But despite being a majority, there is a clear lack of Filipino representation in Hawaii's education. Filipino students want their history and culture to be seen and celebrated by their schools. Having representation is critical in strengthening students' ethnic identities, connections, awareness about the diversity of the community, and self-worth.

 

Our mission is to create a curriculum that focuses on topics about the Philippines and Filipinos in Hawaii that interest and relate to us as Filipino students, but those that we never got to learn about ourselves, for students in schools across Hawaii. Our goal for this curriculum is to empower Filipino students and allow non-Filipinos to learn about and connect to a large part of our community. We want to integrate our curriculum into Hawaii's public schools as a semester credited social studies course open to all high school students. This curriculum will communicate to Filipino students that our history and culture is worthy to be studied and included. We never got to learn about ourselves in schools nor were empowered and invested in such a way; we're hoping to give Filipino students the representation that we never got.
