Early this month our family was shaken by the loss of our Filiberto “Fili” Salazar. On the 288th day of his fight with stage 4 stomach cancer, Fili was preparing for another day’s battle when he became unresponsive. As he awaited the go-ahead to begin another round of chemotherapy our family was forced to say goodbye to the man that never stopped fighting. The cancer had metastasized throughout his body; into his bones and eventually his brain, every minute of every day became an uphill battle. No one besides Fili could describe the pain of the battle he faced, but most days you’d never know he was feuding what would inevitably steal him from our family. Fili’s Fight has taught us more about the man with unwavering courage we have loved since he became a member of our family on March 4, 2009. Every memory of Fili is illuminated by the smile that almost never fell, and his compassionate nature lives on through his 7-year-old son, Jagger.
When Jagger was born he faced a battle of his own. Having been born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) his persistent fight to health was a daily tribulation for him in his infancy. Days became months that Taylor and Fili had not even held their baby, but as Jagger’s health improved and he grew... and grew... NICU nurses nicknamed him “the Big One”. Jagger’s ongoing improvement became the miracle Fili was able to witness during his lifetime. A man with unwavering faith, having witnessed a miracle, was able to love and inspire his son every day of his life for his last 7 years.
We grieve for Jagger who has lost his dad, his hero and his best friend.
We grieve for Fili’s wife, Taylor, who has lost her husband, life partner and best friend.
As they look toward a new future, we have begun raising money for Fili’s headstone and funeral expenses. As anyone who has been through this knows, and as anyone can imagine, the grieving process begins with the interruption of arrangements. Any amount to help aid in this process is greatly appreciated so that Taylor and Jagger can begin healing.
