Bula! My name is Viliame Tui
I am from Fiji and I am looking for support for my country, my Island, my village, my community, and my family.
On Friday December 17, 2020, Fiji was hit with a Category 5 Tropical Cyclone named Yasa. Among many islands that were in the direct path of the storm, Vanua Levu (Fiji’s 2nd largest island and my home island) was in the eye of the storm and suffered total devastation.

If you have been to Fiji you know that our main priority is family and community, so I am turning to the internet community for support during these trying times.
With COVID lockdowns already in place, Fiji’s borders have been shut down to tourists since March. Many people are out of work and already struggling to make it, now with this natural disaster things have escalated quickly..

Families are left without houses, everything they owned destroyed. Farms have been washed away, livestock dead. Marine life is damaged, fishing is scarce, Boat and Ferry transportation was put on hold..the livelihoods of thousands of Fijians are at risk.
It is a hard time for everyone around the world right now, but if you have ANYTHING at all to spare, please consider donating.
We would like to create relief packages for as many families as possible. In this relief package there would be flour, sugar, rice, soap, drinking water, and any other necessities that we are able to acquire depending on funding.

Now that the storm has passed, families are starting to rebuild. Despite the hard times people still have smiles on their faces and they are working together to reconstruct houses, clear debris, replant farm land, and get ready for the holidays.
Please help us put food on the tables of Fijians while they work on rebuilding their lives. Anything you can give will help us reach our goal of $4,000 USD. With this money we can provide Relief packages for 120 families.

Below are details from the OCHA website:
“On 17 December, 2020, TC Yasa cut a path of destruction across Vanua Levu. It was the strongest cyclone since TC Winston in 2016 to hit Fiji;
-NDMO estimates that some 93,000 people (21,000 households) living in the most affected areas of the cyclone
-02 persons have been confirmed dead;
-The damage of the cyclone is estimated by the government to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars;
-A 30 day State of Natural Disaster has been declared.
TC Yasa, with Cat 5 intensity, made landfall over Vanua Levu, Fiji, in the evening of 17 December. It caused heavy destruction to infrastructure, buildings and agricultural areas. The Government of Fiji speaks of hundreds of millions of dollars. It was the strongest storm in the basin since TC Winston in 2016 and the strongest in the cyclone season 2020 – 21.
Based on the secondary data analysis of the cyclone track, there are about 145,000 people within the area with wind speed higher 120km/h. About 130,000 are in the northern division. WFP’s initial vulnerability assessment indicates that approximately 70,000 people in the 3 provinces of northern division are economically vulnerable.
The authorities confirmed that two people have died; one in the Western and one in the Northern Division.
During the height of the storm, some 23,000 people sought shelter in evacuation centers. COVID-19 quarantine measures remain in place.”
