My name is Jephtha Prempeh and I'm a senior at an independent school in the Bronx. I run track, write poetry and music, and can't wait to explore the worlds of Hip-Hop and West African dance in college. I've gotten through my past six years of schooling with my uncle working exhaustively to pay my 3% tuition. An immigrant from Ghana, he has known nothing but laborious, low-paying jobs here in America- yet has still managed to send my older siblings into four year education and put my younger brother and me through independent schools with the help of Prep for Prep. However, in his position it has been impossible to save a substantial amount of money; while only small contributions were asked of him from my older siblings' state college, my uncle does not have the money to contribute to my education in California. With no money in the bank, choosing my dream school over one offering a much fluffier financial aid package was unfortunately a strenuous and doubt-filled decision. I will have to work multiple jobs and hold off on continuing my athletics so as to avoid (ironically) finding myself in debilitating debt after college. I plan to take on a dual degree of studies in psychology and sociology, and as far as my future career goals, I am looking to tackle education reform and provide mental health counseling and rehabilitation to the impoverished kids who need it. I am not asking for a handout, but for honest faith in my goals and direct support in helping me achieve them. Thank you for reading!
