Wolf Patrol: Exposing Wildlife Atrocities

In 2014, Wolf Patrol was founded as a citizen monitoring effort whose intend was to highlight the then only hound hunt for wolves in America which took place in Wisconsin that year. Our members were the only advocacy group to witness the use of hounds to hunt wolves that winter and report on it to the world. Later that year, wolves were returned to federal protections and in the following seven years, Wolf Patrol continued to focus on the plight of wolves in Wisconsin, specifically the conflict caused by bear hunters who bait and train hounds in known wolf areas.

From 2015 until the present time, Wolf Patrol has monitored bear baiting and hound training activities which are responsible for dozens of deadly conflicts between gray wolves and bear hunting hounds. We have also uncovered illegal practices and reported numerous incidents of noncompliance to hunting regulations by hound hunters in Wisconsin.

In 2016, Wolf Patrol began monitoring wildlife killing contests in Wisconsin that targeted coyotes, foxes and other wildlife. It was at one of these contests outside of the town of Laona that we discovered and reported a series of illegal baits intended to kill wolves or any other predator that discovered them. Since then, our citizen monitors have gone undercover at numerous killing contests to expose these barbaric activities to the public with the hope that our evidence would contribute to efforts to end wildlife killing contests.

In 2017, Wolf Patrol began a campaign which continues today, to expose the practice of hunting coyotes with hounds. We launched a "cybercrime unit" which gathered evidence of illegal hound hunting practices such as the use of hunting hounds to attack, maul, fight and kill wildlife and in 2018 our effort led to criminal investigations that resulted in charges against known offenders Since then, our campaign to expose the inherent cruelty involved with hunting not only coyotes, but bobcats, foxes, raccoons and other wildlife has resulted in criminal investigations of hound hunting practices in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Illinois.

In over seven years of monitoring hound hunters, trappers, bear baiters and other wildlife offenders Wolf Patrol's crew has never been cited for any criminal activity. This despite the fact that in 2016, then Governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker signed into law the "Right to Hunt Act" which specifically targeted Wolf Patrol and attempted to make illegal our practice of monitoring controversial hunting practices. We challenged the law and continued going into the field to expose wildlife atrocities and to this day, no county in Wisconsin has chosen to charge our members with violating this unconstitutional law.

In February 2021, Wisconsin wolves again lost federal protections and the state organized a poorly planned hunt that resulted in the legal quota being exceeded by almost 100% by mostly hound hunters. Again, Wolf Patrol was the only organization in the field monitoring the hunt and our presence resulted in more criminal investigations of illegal hound hunting and trapping practices that we discovered during the legal slaughter.

In February 2022, Wisconsin wolves were again returned to federal protections and Wolf Patrol will continue monitoring threats caused by conflicts with bear hunters and illegal hunting. We also remain committed to exposing cruel hound hunting practices not only in Wisconsin, but all over the United States. Towards that end, Wolf Patrol is currently working in Vermont investigating the hound hunting of coyotes in support of proposed legislation which would outlaw the practice.
