Fighting to Stay Afloat for My Family

Hi everyone, my name is Kevin Smith, and I’m reaching out for help with an unexpected and overwhelming vehicle repair expense that I simply can’t cover right now.

I’m the sole provider for my household, supporting my partner and our three kids — two of our own, and my youngest sibling, whom I took in after finding out he was being neglected and mistreated. I became his legal guardian through Children and Youth Services because I couldn’t stand by and watch him fall through the cracks like I once did. I don’t receive any support from his parents, but I’ve made sure he has a safe home, stability, and love.

My partner lives with several chronic health issues, including ankylosing spondylitis, a butterfly vertebrae deformity, and a neurological disorder that causes severe eye pain and light sensitivity. She’s been fighting for disability for over a year and a half, but so far has been denied twice. Because of her conditions, I’m the only source of income for our family.

Earlier this year has been especially rough. Back in February, I was involved in a hit and run — a man intentionally rammed my 2015 Kia Soul three times and fled the scene. I was left paying a $1,000 deductible, and although my insurance repaired the visible damage, they missed underlying mechanical issues that I had to pay for out of pocket. Between the deductible and those repairs, I drained my last $3,000 in savings just trying to keep my car running. Then in June, the engine completely failed, leaving me without transportation.

Out of necessity, I bought a 2020 Kia Sorento from a dealership that assured me it came with a “bumper-to-bumper” warranty for peace of mind. Unfortunately, that peace didn’t last. Right away, I noticed an oil leak, which turned out to be from a cracked oil pan caused during the dealership’s own repair. They fixed it, but shortly after getting my car back, my check engine light came on. The diagnostic code P0420 revealed that the catalytic converter is failing and now needs to be replaced.

The dealership’s own technician confirmed this, but the warranty company denied the claim, saying the converter isn’t covered — even though I was explicitly told it would be. The repair cost is around $2,600, which I just don’t have right now after covering rent, utilities, and groceries — especially with the current government shutdown delaying my food assistance benefits.

I’ve done everything I can to keep my family afloat, but this repair has pushed us past what I can manage alone. I’m asking for help so I can fix my vehicle, keep getting to work, and continue supporting the people who depend on me. Every bit helps more than I can express.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for any help or even just a share.

Edit: we’ve hit about 65% of the goal, and i just want to say how grateful we are. the fact that so many people even took the time to listen, let alone help, means more than i can explain. even if we don’t reach the full amount, what’s already been given makes a huge difference. i can finance the rest and hopefully keep up without falling behind or risking the kids going without. this kindness isn’t something i’ll ever forget.
