Fighting SCIDS for Sebastian Kazuma Sewell

Sebastian Kazuma Sewell

Jyssika and Tony welcomed sweet baby Sebastian at only 31 weeks 6 days. He was born via emergency C-section and rushed to the NICU. At 3 days old he was improving. He was coming off oxygen and his jaundice was gone. We got a call from his neonatologist letting us know that he was flagged in his newborn screening. Later that day they confirmed the diagnosis, his immune system is broken, he is low on T and B cells, a rare condition called SCIDS, more commonly known as bubble boy syndrome. He was air lifted to UCLA Santa Monica to see a specialist that deals with these cases. Tony and Jyssika, 3 days after a Jyssika’s C-section, had to drive to meet them there.

Jyssika is currently checked into the same hospital as Sebastian so she can prevent exposure. As of now we have been told the treatment will be either a bone marrow transplant or gene therapy. The treatment will likely be followed by months to years of isolation at home.

Jyssika went into preterm labor at 23 weeks pregnant and has been off work since then, she will not be going back to work for the foreseeable future. The expenses involved are already adding up, this sweet little family could use all the help they can get.

Here is more information about his condition.
