Fighting Plastic Bags With Sign Language

My name is Mimi. I'm deaf, and we are ተኪ Teki, the first paper bag company run by deaf women in the world. We use Ethiopian sign language to fight plastic bags... and it works! Together we have already replaced more than a million plastic bags.
Since my childhood at the orphanage, I always felt a need to help my deaf sisters. Being unable to hear is a daily challenge in Ethiopia. We have the right to be independent and earn a salary like everyone else.
Making paper bags has changed our lives. We convince people to ditch plastic bags in sign language better than other companies do with their voices. We feel so proud, and there is no sign to describe this feeling.
But it's by far not enough. So many deaf remain excluded, and now we are burdened by a conflict in the north of Ethiopia. We can't let them down! Teki's battle against plastic is far from over. We need your help to scale up and create more jobs! ❤️
