Hi, my name is Joriel, and this is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to write.

In just a few short weeks, my entire life has turned upside down. I recently lost my job under wrongful and painful circumstances, all while receiving devastating news about my health.

On October 17th, I was diagnosed with chronic leukemia, a life-changing condition that requires me to take two pills a day to help save my life. That same day, I opened up to one of the chefs at work about my diagnosis, trying to be transparent about what I was going through. Instead of receiving compassion or understanding, I was told I was a “liability.” Those words hit me harder than I can explain.

Despite everything, I tried to remain professional and follow the proper steps. On October 23rd, I returned to work on my scheduled day with all my medical documentation in hand, ready to provide proof and do things the right way. Instead, I was terminated on the spot, told it was because of a “phone policy.” The truth is, I had only been on my phone speaking with my doctor and my mother about my diagnosis and next steps.

To make things even harder, I had just moved into a new home, finally trying to build some peace and stability for myself. Overnight, I lost my source of income, my health took a drastic turn, and I was left trying to figure out how to survive.

Now I’m facing not only the emotional toll of this experience but also the financial burden of:

• Paying for my leukemia medications and medical care

• Covering living expenses while I fight to get back on my feet

I’ve always been the type of person who works hard and keeps going no matter what. But this time, I need help.
