Anyone that has met Kuma has experienced the love and light that radiates from him. Kuma loves with his whole entire heart, and the thump of his tail can be heard from across the room when he sees someone he loves. Kuma is a seasoned adventure dog and loves to attend agility classes, lure coursing, and bitework training. He makes friends with other dogs everywhere he goes and has a special way of bringing even the most shy dogs out of their shells.
Kuma is just over one year old. He has so much life left to live and plenty of fight in his heart. Kuma very suddenly became ill in the past few days. He went from happily galloping on a canicross run to flat out on his side and hardly responsive. He was immediately brought to Blue Pearl Animal ER and was initially thought to have a tick-borne illness causing a fever, poor appetite, and pain. He had X-rays of his abdomen taken that showed nothing abnormal. He was sent home for monitoring and started on medication for the tick-borne illness.
To everyone's horror, he did not improve. He started trembling non-stop and could not find a way to get comfortable. In fact, he declined so far that we became terrified he is close to losing his life. He was brought to another veterinarian who did blood work and found that Kuma has an infection and pancreatitis, as well as severe dehydration and weight loss. He was given fluids and received anti-nausea and pain medications. He finally felt good enough to stop trembling, but was still in such severe pain and so weak that he is not able to stand on his own to go to the bathroom.
When these concerning symptoms continued, he was transferred to a 24-hour care center to receive specialized care. This includes hospitalization with IV fluids and medications to control his pain. We still do not know exactly what is causing Kuma's rapid decline. He has hardly had a chance to experience life. We want to fight for him while he is recovering from this illness. He isn't ready to give up this fight yet, and neither is his family.
We know times are hard for everyone. Please consider donating if at all possible. Kuma needs all of the support we can find. If you can't donate right now, please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this unthinkable tragedy. Please share to help spread awareness for this sweet boy. He'd surely thank you with a tail wag if he could.
