Fighting for Dean
Donation protected
As of today Nov 3, Dean has been in the hospital for 35 days and his homecoming date is up in the air. Dean needs to focus on recovery and not worry about monetary situations.
Please read his entire story here:
July 2018: As most of you may know, Dean was diagnosed back in 12’ with a very rare blood cancer called Primary myelofibrosis which effects his bone marrow, and was put on a daily chemo pill which helped maintain and keep his white blood count low. and help maintain his platelets and all the other blood count in check. As of December of 17’ his Dr’s had noticed the chemo had stopped working. In May we traveled back to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota to see his other Dr. who is world renown in this type of rare blood cancers. He brought us devastating news... Deans stem cells are mutating at a fast rate, which means x chromosomes 9 has switched with x chromosome 14, and so on. Not to sure how to expand on that.. it’s all very confusing at this point. The Dr basically said he has up to 5 yrs to live without a transplant. The Good news- they found a donor! A 9 out of 10 match! It’s a young healthy 28 yrs old male from Germany who I believe just recently moved to the US. Dean and Nina moved to Scottsdale Az August 12th. to begin our journey. Dean transplant is scheduled August 20th at the Mayo Transplant Hospital in Phoenix where he will undo a lengthy, and nerve racking process. We will be leavening this Sunday for a week to start his “Head to toe” physical CT scans, MRI, and lots of blood work, and hopefully a final bone marrow biopsy. It’s going to be a long journey ahead as we endure this 5-7 month possibly a year stay in Az as he recovers. please keep Dean and our family in your prayers.
Sept 2018:
Deans Transplant has been delayed a month due to a deep sinus infection. He went through sinus surgery last Thursday and everything it went well, he will see his ENT Dr this coming Thursday 9-20 for his follow up. Hopefully His Dr will gives a thumbs up to move forward. They have September 26th as his new admitting day, and the next 3-4 days they will begin his chemo, which they will use one of serval possibilities of chemo depending on his lung capacity. His BMT transplant will be on October 4. If everything goes well, and I pray it will, he will be out of the hospital 3-4 weeks after transplant. Once he gets back to the condo he will need 24-7 care, along with weekly Dr appointments for the next 100 days. Which will roughly puts him January 8th. Then we should be able to return home to Albuqureque! Yes cooler weather please! I will update you on how he is after his chemo treatments and a few days after his transplant. It’s still hotter than blaze here, today the high was 106*with zero rain in sight. Actually it hasn’t rained since we’ve been here which was the end of July early August. And it’s the middle of September! Sure looking forward to the cool down everyone is taking about. OH yeah... that’s in late October- November.
Oct 4:
Hi All!! It’s finally here! Deans Transplant is scheduled! Well today is the day
Oct 21st. Day +17 for Dean who remains in the hospital. His WBC,platelets are still not improving as much as they would hoped . They say it may may take longer due to his enlarged spleen, they are giving him blood transfusions of platelets and red blood every 3rd day. Despite of his Broncos loosing...and drinking boost the last few weeks, from his nausea, one of many side effects from all the chemo, he is in good spirits, and upbeat as can be. We’re hoping he will be released in time of Haley’s Birthday which is on the 24th of October. He is walking 1/2 mile everyday around his unit which is 26 times around the pod, and is eating better now then last few weeks. We had a wonderful visit from our good friends in Albuquerque, come down to see us! It was great to see them and spend some quality time together. Hopefully in a few days his blood counts will go up, and he can come back to our Scottsdale home.
