My name is Lacey Culvey. I have created this platform as a means to help me achieve my dreams of getting a college education and one day working for the UN. I aspire to help those around me and make a difference in people’s lives by helping with humanitarian aid and crisis and disaster response, specifically in the Middle East.
Last year, I was accepted to the University of Michigan and had planned on attending, but that quickly fell through as it was not financially feasible. I worked very hard in school to receive scholarships and graduated 8th in my class in hopes of getting more aid but it was not enough. I decided to put off college for a year and stay home to work and save money for the following year, with a new plan of attending Northern Michigan University.
In March of 2019, I developed a very severe eating disorder. I was struggling mentally and emotionally with depression and anxiety and my physical health began to deteriorate as well as the eating disorder took over my life. In May I was hospitalized and told I couldn’t work anymore because my health was at risk. I then had to begin looking at treatment centers and using the money I saved over the course of the year for college to sustain myself and my recovery. I very quickly started draining my savings, as treatment is very expensive but was vital to my health.
I spent 4 weeks in Arizona going through treatment where I made tremendous strides in gaining back my health and becoming a new and happier person. Since arriving back home I have started another program for eating disorders that will prepare me to handle college on my own as I continue to heal and move forward with my life. I had to put recovery at the forefront of my life, as it was essential I sought help and treatment, which resulted in a great financial burden.
Education is so incredibly important to me and I care so much about helping people in the future. Going away to school is also very important to my recovery as it will help me engage in my passions and discover myself as a person. I would be so grateful for any help in making my dreams and goals become a reality as I’ve worked very hard to get myself to college and to fight my eating disorder. Thank you so much for hearing my story and helping me continue what I’m passionate about.
