#Fighting Cancer for Derrick
Donation protected
My name is Sherrie Rice (Wilkins). I am humbly asking for your help in
this fight for one of our sons, Derrick Wilkins who has
been battling cancer since the age of 4 years old. Derrick has been
dealing with serious health issues most of his life. However, he
continues to be a fighter. As a child, Derrick was diagnosed with a type of rare cancer called Neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is a type of
cancer that attacks your nerve cells. Ninety percent of the time it
occurs in children under the age of 5. We were told when Derrick was
diagnosed that he would not live past 9 to 15 months.
My little man (age 5) is in the two tone blue and white shirt with his
brothers and one of the Gladiators. Derrick went through a series of
chemotherapy, radiation, an experimental bone marrow transplant and also surgery for removal of a huge tumor that sat on top of his adrenal
gland. They also removed his adrenal gland and his kidney on his left
side. Derrick was in and out of the hospital for two years being an
inpatient a month or two at a time. He also received a mass amount of
outpatient services such as x-rays, CT Scans, MRI's, blood, platelet, and plasma transfusions. We thank God for the team of experts that took
care of Derrick at Fairfax Children's Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia.
We received an out-pour of love, hope, faith and prayers from family,
friends, neighbors and even strangers. Statistically, if a person is in
remission for five years or more they are considered cured. We believe that all the treatment, prayers and God's Healing Hands put Derrick in remission after five years. We had all types of test done and there was no sign of any cancer cells. We are so grateful.
Unfortunately, one night in November of 2018 Derrick (age 28) woke up in
excruciating pain in his abdomen area. He was rushed to the
Emergency room in Columbia, SC. Test after test was done and then we received heartbreaking news that Derrick's cancer had reoccurred.
Derrick had trouble breathing on his own. Therefore, they had to put
Derrick on a ventilator to help him breath.
That night Derrick was rushed to MUSC in Charleston, SC. Not only
that, but we were told that the tumor that was found, was sitting on top of his adrenal gland on his right side. Adrenal Cortisol Carcinoma is
his diagnosis now. Stage 4) At the same time, we were told that he had
pneumonia, diabetes, high blood pressure, pancreatitis and also a blockage in his small intestine. Needless to say, this has been a long, very
difficult process. Derrick was in the hospital from the end of November to the middle of January. He had test after test, scans, biopsy's, and
surgery to remove the cancerous tumor that sat on top of his adrenal
gland on the right side. Thankfully, his one kidney was good and he
could keep it. Otherwise, he would have to go on dialysis.
Since Derrick has such a rare cancer, all of his physicians, specialist and medical team are in Charleston, SC. Derrick lives with myself and my
spouse in Columbia, SC. I am his mother, caregiver, advocate, one of his biggest fans and transportation. I would not have it any other way.

We are in urgent need of your help. In spite of the wonderful help of Insurance, it does not cover it all. We are asking for your
support for the cost of treatments, medicines, travel and family
expenses.
Since Derrick's discharge from the hospital in January 2019, we have
been back and forth to MUSC on a regular basis for inpatient and
outpatient services. Sometimes, it is so difficult to ask for help but
when it comes to helping your children it is a different story. Derrick
feels so bad because the financial stress that this has put on us. We are
setting up this account in an effort to help with financial burdens so
Derrick can concentrate on beating this cancer.
We are extremely thankful/grateful for all the love, prayers and
support he has and will continue to receive. Any size donation will be
helpful no matter how small or large. Thank you so much for all your
help and we want to also thank MUSC Staff for all their expertise.
