Fighting Ana (anorexia nervosa in Ireland)
As you may already know, Ireland’s mental health system is failing it’s most vulnerable citizens. The children and adolescents in this country are suffering and the help they so desperately need is not out there. Anorexia nervosa is the most deadly mental illness, with a higher fatality rate than any other. It can effect anyone, but disproportionally targets young people. An estimated 2000 to 4000 children between 8-17 may be currently struggling in Ireland. There is no inpatient unit in this country for young people suffering from anorexia nervosa despite these frightening statistics.
This page is being set up on behalf of a young girl who has been battling this life threatening illness for 3 years now. For the purpose of this page she will be referred to as “Ana”, as we cannot share her real name. Ana is a teenage girl who has been struggling with anorexia nervosa, and has been in and out of hospital for years, including a 3 week stay in a hospital heart unit in March of 2019 where she fought to stay alive from the severe physical impact of this illness. She has recently been discharged from a 7 month inpatient stay in a psychiatric unit, however the unit did not have the resources needed to treat the illness and further help is needed as she is still underweight and feels her mental state has deteriorated further. The HSE have said there is no more they can do to help her, and Ana is currently only receiving 2 hours community support per week. Ana and her family are desperate for proper treatment. There is a clinic in the UK that specialises in young people suffering from anorexia nervosa, that has all the facilities and resources to treat her. The aim of this page is to raise enough money for Ana’s family to take her to this clinic and save their child’s life. Ana’s family is crying out for help, they want their daughter back after years of losing her to this cruel illness.
