My name is Jonathan Thomas. My fiancé Claudette Anderson has given me the greatest gift I could ever hope for -- a family. She has three amazing children that fill my life with joy – two sons and a daughter.
In March of 2015 Claudette's life was changed forever. She was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid cancer. It was supposed to be a quick surgery with a short recovery. The reality was much different. The surgery lasted eight hours. They removed her Thyroid and more than a dozen lymph nodes from her neck. The surgery resulted in complications leaving her in the hospital recovering for two and a half weeks. Ultimately she was left with sporadic difficulty breathing and speaking as a result of the surgery. One of her vocal chords was paralyzed and she has been diagnosed with Spasmodic Dysphonia which halts her speech and blocks her ability to breath during episodes. The doctors ordered her to stop working. She had not earned enough at her new job to be eligible for state disability leaving her on medi-cal and cash aid from the state.
We were grateful nonetheless, the outlook seemed good. Papillary Thyroid cancer we were told was the 'good' cancer. It was supposed to be easy to treat, easy to beat. In November Claudette had a second surgery to remove more lymph nodes after suspicious results were returned from a biopsy.
It turns out that Claudette is not in the group of people that easily beat this cancer. On 1/29/16 she received her contrast dye MRI results. The cancer is back and has spread to the other side of her neck around her jugular and has been detected in her upper chest behind her collar bone. Her endocrinologist immediately referred her to a specialist surgeon at UCLA. Her first appointment is 2/8/16 – an indicator of the urgent nature of her condition.
The first round drained me of much of my available resources and this time I cannot do this alone. The travel costs to UCLA, hotels/housing in Los Angeles, kenneling of her care dog, feeding the children hundreds of miles from our home and other non-covered medical expenses are beyond my ability to handle.
Claudette is 36 and a beautiful and kind human being. She has spent much of her life taking care of others in her position through hospice and in home caregiving. Being unable to work, she is unable to contribute to the costs we will face. We need your help to get through this difficult time in our life.
Anything at all will help. If you cannot afford to help, we can use all your positive thoughts and prayers.
Our need is immediate. This came upon us without warning and we were left far from prepared. The money will only be used to cover necessary costs to care for the family, care animal, medical expenses, boarding and travel.
Ultimately if any money is left over after her treatment is complete we will donate the remaining portion to another in the same position we are currently in.
We would be forever thankful for your contributions to help save her life.
God Bless.
