Dear family, friends, and well-wishers,
On March 24, 2017, Teneka and Donte received some devastating news that turned their life upside down. Their 19 year old son, Chris Bobo, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.
Chris initially went to see an optometrist because there was no movement in his left eye. The doctor quickly referred him to take a MRI within the same day. We did not expect the doctor to call back with such unbearable news that Chris has a brain tumor. This left our family in complete shock.
The following week Chris had his first appointment to further explain the diagnosis. As you can imagine our family and friends were filled with uncertainty not knowing what to expect. He was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), which is a rare and aggressive form of cancer. It is most commonly found in children age 5-9 years old. However, since he is an adult, there is little to no reasearch on the prognosis. DIPG is a mass in his brainstem that is intermingled with healthy cells. This form of cancer is inoperable because it is by his brainstem, the most vital part of the brain. The brain stem is responsible for nearly all functions such as breathing, eating, and movements.
A few days ago he started his 30 days of radiation. However, radiation may only shrink the tumor and it can grow back even more aggressively. We have called numerous hospitals that specialize in neurology and have done other extensive research to make sure Chris is receiving the best help possible. After researching we realized treatments and clinical trials are expensive in fighting DIPG. We have to take into consideration the cost for travel, lodge, and doctor visits. We are asking for donations to cover Chris’s expenses. No matter the amount it is still a big help and appreciated. We are trying to get him into other treatments options after radiation.
This diagnosis has been a challenge for Chris but he remains positive and strong. Not only does he continue to have a smile on his face but he makes it his mission to keep everyone smiling around him. Chris is a grant high school alumni and has goals of finishing college and becoming an accountant. He is outgoing, full of energy, and has a silly sense of humor. Now more than ever we cherish every moment spent with him.
Chris is blessed with a strong support system that will be there for him every step of the way. Our family is remaining hopeful and praying for a cure.
