Alex Almendarez is a 54 year old man who lives in San Antonio Texas. Alex is a husband, a father, a grandfather and a Godly man who has always put others before himself!
Alex is a proud retiree who served in law enforcement for San Antonio ISD (28 years) and for San Antonio Park Police (2 years). Alex Almendarez has always been the light in a dark room.
On the 17th of December of 2018 Alex Almendarez and his family of 5 had a life changing experience and was unprepared for what would happen next.
Alex was admitted into Christus Santa Rosa-Westover Hills Hospital after experiencing major pain in his lower abdominal area. After getting tested doctors found out that Alex was ill from several things. First they found out that he had pneumonia, he had gall stones, Lymphedema in his legs and they also discovered that he had suffered from several silent heart attacks. Alex and his family were shocked. There was never any signs or any complaints of Alex experiencing a heart attack.
Doctors began to examine Alex and noticed that he had shortness of breath and his condition was not looking good. After examining Alex carefully they saw that his heart was pumping way too fast and if they kept him in the state he was in they predicted he wouldn’t make it another day. So doctors came up with a solution that his family never thought would be an option.
Alex had to be put on life support to be able to give his heart rest. The Almendarez family and many friends were devastated to hear what it had come to.
Doctors and nurses were doing all that they could, but sadly had to suggest and recommend Alex’s wife to start planning funeral arrangements. But Brenda and her children didn’t take that for an answer and began to have faith and pray for a miracle. Friends and family stood on faith and prayed continuously for God to move in this time. They didn't stop until something happened.
Alex's heart was getting more weak every day that passed and the only way to save him was to preform a procedure to install stents into his dying heart. The heart doctor was very skeptical about going through with the surgery because they thought Alex wasn't strong enough to make it through. So they denied to do the procedure.
Literally that same day they looked over Alex's charts again and repeatedly looked at his sonogram video they took from his heart. The doctor second guessed again and decided to go ahead and do the surgery but the doctor did say that there was a possibility and 50/50 chance that Alex would make it out alive and a chance that Alex wouldn't.
Thankfully it was successful and Alex made it! After it was all done doctors, nurses, family and friends thought that it would only go up from here but little did they know that more obstacles were on it's way.
Alex was still unconscious and on life support and they saw little improvement from Alex after the stents were placed but not as much as they wanted to see so they decided to connect Alex to a medical machine to support and pump the heart called, “The Impella”.
Test after test results began to flood in and it wasn’t looking good. They discovered that his kidneys weren’t functioning correctly. Then they also discovered that his lungs were beginning to fill up with fluid that stayed inside and as time passed they noticed and sadly had to break the news that all of his organs were slowly shutting down. Sadness and doubt filled up the minds and hearts of the family but the amazing staff at Christus Santa Rosa didn’t give up, they did everything they could to help a man they didn’t even know!
They began dialysis right away. Alex had to have dialysis every day or every other day it just really depended on the day he was having and he was in the dialysis process for 10-24 hours each day. His case was so severe that there had to be a 24 hour nurse who had to stay with Alex in the room while he was getting dialysis. Time and time again the blood continued to clog up the machine which was very strange and unusual with patients so they knew this was very serious. Every time the machine powered down the nurses and staff didn’t let that stop them. They finally got it to work over time and was able to remove fluid from inside of the body.
Everyday was a celebration because he made it through another night when he shouldn’t even had made it through the first night but throughout time everything remained the same. No improvement, no change, no nothing.
It has been a month since Alex has been placed on life support and unresponsive, it’s been too long for the tube in his mouth. A Tracheostomy procedure was needed right away.
Its been almost 2 months, doctors and nurses finally saw a shift in his performance and hope began to rise. Kidneys were now functioning and working properly after not producing fluid for a month in a half. His lungs began to seem clear and his breathing had been controlled.
Then one day, Alex opened his eyes for the first time in forever and saw his loved ones surround him. Everyone was thrilled and Alex just gave a big smile.
Fast forward to today, here he is...Day 74, when there seemed to be no hope, Alex is still here on this earth on today with the power of love and prayer. Alex is now fully awake, fully responsive, talking, eating & moving. Organs are fully back up and running, he is alive and well. Life support was no longer a need, then was put on oxygen and now he is only breathing on air. Alex is aware of what happened and shocked about all the events that took place during this time but he always expresses how grateful and blessed he is to be able to have a second chance at life. Nurses and staff constantly check on Alex and simply love to come and talk with him. They are amazed about this story that Alex gets to tell. They even gave him a nickname so now everyone at the hospital calls him the miracle man. And he truly is a miracle.
The next step for Mr Almendarez is to be discharged from the hospital and transferred and stay at a rehab center where they will work with him to help him to stand and walk again.
Unfortunately Insurance is something Alex Almendarez does not have. Hospital bills are beginning to come in and as he gets closer to come home with his family he does have to have certain medical equipment for the well being of his health and also many medications that he will need which in turn becomes expensive without insurance.
The goal is minimum $500,000. All of this is to cover for his stay at Christus Santa Rosa Hosptial, also it will cover the cost for the procedures that had to take place, and for all the medical equipment and medication he is going to need to have after his departure from the hospital. Any amount and donation will help and go to these important needs for him to become 100%. himself again.
If you would like to donate to this miracle man, Alex and his family are eternally grateful. Again any donation is greatly appreciated and anything helps.
Alex is currently still fighting to go home and he is a step closer everyday !
We thank you in advance and God Bless.
