Fight with Janice L. Green

Cancer Deserves An Answer

In her last days, I am reminded of my mother's service to her community, family, and those she came in contact with. Janice L. Green first served her family, raising five children including a set of triplets (I am one of those three) without the support of their fathers, then her church, leading Sunday school, and jail ministry. She served her community as a police detective for over 30 years and volunteered for years at a senior living center.

Last March, my mother was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer. At the time of her diagnosis, her cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and invaded her chest wall. Her cancer was metastatic. As of today, her cancer has metastasized to her brain and bones. Her time is limited.

According to the CDC, breast cancer death rates are 40% higher among black women than white women. My mother was admitted to hospice on Friday, she, unfortunately over the next few days, will be apart of that number reported.

What can you do

For starters, in lieu of flowers, we, her family would like to collect donations for outstanding and unforeseen medical expenses. We have estimated that cost at $6,000.

Second, we would like to make a $25,000 donation in Janice's name to doctors and organizations working on the fringe of cancer, specifically breast cancer research. Cancer deserves an answer and it is time that women stopped dying from this disease. I will say from my first-hand account, the road ahead for women with metastasized cancer is painful and some will experience drastic physical changes. Women like my mother deserve better.

Two organizations that we are considering: author and oncologist Azra Raza's work and research on 'The First Cell '. What if technologies existed that could scan your body while you slept for heat spots that indicate abnormal cell clusters? Listen to Raza discuss her findings here

The Angiogenesis Foundation, my mother found a story of women who beat cancer using angiogenesis therapy in combination with a complete lifestyle overhaul. However, she found this information too late, married to her way of life, my family, and I would try ways to introduce a different way to live but all our attempts failed.

From the Foundations website;
More than 85 percent of the U.S.’s healthcare expenditures go toward treating chronic diseases, most of which are preventable. The WHO reports, for example, that 80 percent of cases of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes are preventable. So is 40 percent of all cancer.

Janice is loved dearly by her family. In the near future, we mourn her loss. However, tomorrow, we fight!

Thank you for joining us.
