** AN UPDATE ON FRANK FERRER **
It is with great pain and deep sorrow to announce that Frank Ferrer passed away on March 21, 2021 at 9:50am due to COVID-19 related complications. All five of us, The Ferrer Five, were reunited in person at last and were by his side surrounding him before he took his last breath and heart beat. Frank fought until the very end. He had a tough two month battle in the hospital, spending 50 days in the ICU receiving life support through a ventilator, and battled numerous complications along the way. He waited for all of us to be together before going to Heaven. Our family knows and are first hand witnesses of how much our Dad was fighting to come back home to us - we were his life and his motivation to keep fighting.
The medical staff treated Frank like their own family and it was a hard loss for everyone. Our family diligently communicated every day with a spectrum of healthcare professionals on our Dad's medical team including nurses, intensivists, pulmonologists, nephrologist, cardiologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, cardio-thoracic surgeons, and much more.
We dedicated our lives to our Dad as he was fighting in the hospital - spending many hours daily talking to him via FaceTime, taking turns visiting him every day as soon as he was removed from isolation, held a daily Zoom update and prayer with family and friends allowing them to be with him, researching endlessly and doing our due diligence to be the best advocates, tapping into our network and collaborating with healthcare professionals for additional guidance, and so much more. Because we know we did our very best and everything we possibly could, we find comfort in this and in knowing he is in a better place and at peace.
Frank Ferrer will always be remembered as extremely loving and a phenomenal example of a husband, father, son, brother, godfather, uncle, friend and mentor. He was a bright light in everyone's life - full of life and advice for others, always kind, happy and joyful, compassionate, generous, selfless, loving, always doing the right thing and standing up for what is right, thoughtful, funny, intelligent, hardworking, strong, courageous, resilient, down to earth, patient, supportive, a problem solver, reliable, an eternal optimist, a jack of all trades, and so much more. At 55 years old, Frank inspired so many people, touched endless hearts, and made an immense, positive impact on numerous lives. He had a smile and presence that would light up any room. Dad dedicated his life to serving others - he lived to serve others. He was a leader, had a passion for teaching others, and strived to always be the best version of himself and inspiring others to do the same. If you know Frank, you know his iconic smile and as he took his last breath, he made sure to send us off with that smile one final time. His legacy will undoubtedly live on through his wife, children, and the many people he's influenced and impacted throughout his life.
THE FIGHT
Hello - we are the Ferrer Family, and we want to thank you for taking the time to read Frank Ferrer’s story - our dad and OUR HERO. On January 10, 2021, we received the distressing news that our father tested positive for COVID-19. He has now been in the hospital for more than 6 weeks and is still fighting. The past month and a half have been a roller coaster of emotions for our mom and family - some days we receive great, positive news and other days are painful and unbearable. We continue to remain strong and FIGHT with FRANK FERRER, our dad, every day - never giving up, never giving in.
Ten days into Frank’s self-quarantine on January 20, 2021, he went to the ER due to shortness of breath and worsened COVID-19 symptoms. That same day, we discovered the heartbreaking news that he had COVID-19 pneumonia and would need to stay longer. He was immediately placed on supportive care requiring high oxygen level needs. Eleven days later on January 31, 2021, we received the traumatic call that our dad was urgently transferred to the ICU and put on a ventilator.
FRANK’S CURRENT CONDITION
Our dad now has severe ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) due to the COVID pneumonia attacking his lungs. Although he no longer has COVID-19, his body, especially his lungs, are dealing with the residual damage and aftermath. There is no cure for the scarred tissue, fibrosis and damage in his lungs - only time will tell. He continues to be in the ICU in a medically-induced coma receiving supportive care through the ventilator to assist him with breathing. On February 23, 2021, Frank underwent a pacemaker procedure due to "heart pauses" where his heart would stop for 6-8 seconds at a time. This permanent pacemaker will assist him with heart rhythm issues.
The medical team at Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center has been outstanding. They continue to provide our dad with the best level of care, make us feel supported, and communicate with us three times a day. They are always patient, understanding, and thorough while taking the time to answer all of our questions. They also set up a video chat to allow our family to see and talk to him daily via FaceTime. Each day we talk to our dad, we give him words of encouragement, life updates, share stories and memories, play his favorite music as a means of therapy to calm and de-stress him, and guide him throughout this process, so that he’s never alone and always knows that we are by his side every step of the way. Our dad was removed from isolation on February 14, 2021 in which our mom got to spend Valentine’s Day with him. We take turns visiting him every day in addition to the daily FaceTime video calls.
As a family, we have been focusing on things we can change such as keeping the faith and staying strong for our dad. We hold a daily Zoom prayer to allow all family and friends to collectively pray for our dad's healing, a miracle for his lungs to fully recover, to guide his medical team, and to protect his mind, body, and spirit as he fights every day.
ABOUT FRANK
Frank is an exceptional father, husband, brother, uncle, friend, co-worker, and an overall amazing person. He has always been the rock of our family and has taken care of the bills for him and our mom. He’s always there to lend a hand to his three children, extended family, friends, and work colleagues. He is a kind, generous, selfless, hardworking, supportive, and a simple, loving family man who wants nothing more than to spend time with his loved ones. He’s a jack of all trades, loves to make people laugh, enjoys his sports especially football and basketball, a foodie, and a nature enthusiast. He always talked about his excitement of having grandchildren and to see his youngest daughter, graduate from her Doctor of Occupational Therapy program in June 2021.
During these trying times, we immediately stepped in to help with our parents’ finances to take the burden away from our mom in addition to managing the demands of our dad’s medical treatment. We truly admire how strong and courageous our mom has been during this difficult time.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
We welcome you to join us in the FIGHT with FRANK FERRER against COVID-19. My siblings and I created this page to get our dad’s story out there as he is fighting each day on a ventilator in the ICU to come back home. Any funds donated will go towards our dad’s medical bills and relieve our mom of extra financial burdens, so she can focus on finding time to rest and take care of herself. Your prayers, support, love, and positive thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking the time to read our dad’s story. Please feel free to share Frank Ferrer's story.
With our deepest love and gratitude,
- The Ferrer Family
