In August of 2017, I was diagnosed with Stage3 breast cancer (Invasive Ductal Carcinoma ER+, PR+, Her2-). In December of 2017, I had a mastectomy.
After recovery, it was discovered that the cancer had spread to my liver and at that point, it became Stage4 which they say is uncurable. I underwent 3 months of IV chemo which got rid of almost all of the tumors (was left with 2 tumors that were 3mm in size). After that, I remained on a chemo pill for maintenance (3 months). At the end of September, we discovered that the cancer was progressing again in the liver and had also spread to the sternum and lungs.
I started a new chemo pill and hormonal drugs as systemic treatments but the tumors in the liver were life-threatening. At that point, I decided to pursue a localized treatment for the liver called y-90 radioembolization. I had this treatment on Oct 31st. It successfully halted the growth of the tumors in the liver. I also started another new chemo pill and hormonal drug.
In December, I saw a new oncologist who ordered further analysis of the liver biopsy I had done back in March 2018. These results indicated that the cancer had changed and was ER-, PR-, Her2- or "triple negative". I had been treated for hormonal cancer since March which would explain why the treatments weren't working.
In Jan 2019, I had a PET scan which showed that the cancer was growing again in the liver and sternum and that it had also spread to the hips, spine, and neck. I decided to get a new liver biopsy to see if anything had changed since March. I also decided to get chemo sensitivity testing done which should tell us the specific IV chemo that will kill these specific cancer cells. We are also going to get a new genomic analysis done which will look for mutations that have targeted treatments. Right now we are waiting for results.
