Fight For Mikey

My name is Kathi Harris. My son Mikey is 19 years old and he has endured many medical challenges since he was a baby. He was given a life expectancy of 7-10 years, but thanks to the great care of his doctors and support from our community he has been beating the odds for a decade!

His whole life, Mikey has been fighting a disease called Mitochondrial Disease which affects multiple organs, and impacts the body’s Neurologic, Cardiac, Gastrointestinal and Muscular systems. He was diagnosed with Growth Hormone Deficiency at age 2, and Autism at age 4. Mikey had a life-saving colostomy placed at age 7 when he was diagnosed with a non-functioning colon, and surgery before his first birthday to place a “G-Tube” through which he receives most of his nutrition and medications.

Mikey’s conditions require frequent medical appointments, testing, and in-home nursing to administer the 16+ medications he takes each day to manage his symptoms. There are many out-of-pocket costs related to Mikey’s care, from expensive prescriptions, to doctor co-pays, hospital travel, and more. To ensure I am available for his needs, I often cannot work full-time.
