Hong Kong exile accommodations project
June 4th is the 32nd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square incident. The tragedy 32 years ago has changed the fate of many Chinese in the second half of their lives. I am one of them. I left Hong Kong 25 years ago to seek freedom and escape from the brutal dictatorship of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). However, I did not expect that the tragedy 32 years ago would happen again in Hong Kong in 2019. Today I see a group of young compatriots who are struggling with their lives. For this reason, I am trying to raise $20,000 in hopes of giving them a helping hand in seeking asylum in the UK. This is the story:
In 2019, the Hong Kong government proposed an extradition bill which became an excuse for the CCP to arrest and punish dissidents. This controversy sparked criticism and made 1.03 million people protest on the street, 2,600+ people injured and 10,250 people got arrested. The bill was eventually "withdrawn", but was later signed and passed in 2020 by the CCP under the guise of China's National Security Law. Those arrested by the police faced questionable trials; drowned or fallen bodies were being discovered in Hong Kong with the police claiming them to be non-suspicious deaths. In my opinion, Hong Kong’s current problem isn't whether there is democracy and freedom, but rather, safety and survival. The British government knows very well how bad the situation in Hong Kong is, so Hong Kong residents who hold a British National Overseas Passport (BNO) are granted the ability to immigrate to the UK. However, some high-risk people from Hong Kong do not have a BNO, they can only apply for refugees or political asylum. A considerable number of young people are not even able to leave Hong Kong due to their financial problems as they lack the proper funding for food, clothing, housing, transportation, and even lawyer fees (if they ever need to appeal the results of their applications).
Fortunately, the British government does provide assistance to refugees who struggle financially. The British government will try its best to provide refugees with housing and financial support (approximately £35 per week). My friend is now waiting for the approval of his refugee application. He met four other Hong Kong people who needed help. Their homeowner is very nice, allowing the five of them to squeeze in one room. However, they cannot maintain social distancing during this pandemic, and are living very stressful lives. At this moment, they are attempting to find a place so the 5 of them can live in a better environment. Their currently go towards rent, food and municipal taxes and they are not allowed to work until their asylum application is approved, Although they can apply for housing and further government assistance after their savings are exhausted, it will take time to review the applications, possibly leading to homelessness.
I am attempting to raise funds for people who are facing a similar situation so that they can have a financial buffer to ride out their current predicament. The Hong Kong government has taken very severe measures against dissidents, especially those who provide financial assistance to dissidents. This action is in violation of their National Security Law, so I decided to seek international assistance. I sincerely hope that everyone can support my cause. Thank you!
