Fight for Fil Myelodysplastic syndrome in Belize

Hello, my name is Yasmin and I am the daughter of Filiberto Castañeda who was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome a month ago.

My dad is a 74 year old retired Agronomist in the small unique country of Belize. He is always loving, humorous, helpful and extremely humble with a passion for doing any house work or chore he can to do something for the day and for his family.

You may say he has lived life but he hasn’t. He spent his whole life working hard to provide for my mom, my 3 brothers and I. Now that he is finally retired and was ready to spend time with his wife, children and grandchildren, this rare blood disorder attacked him and our worlds have come crashing down.

The problem with this rare type of cancer is that it attacks his bone marrow and the production of his red and white blood cells and platelets. He is fighting for his life and due to his low platelets, we cannot touch him to protect him from any infections. As we walk into his hospital room where he is quarantined, we are wearing gloves, hair nets and shoe protectors to avoid him being contaminated with anything. It is a surreal time for us.

Along with God’s prayers we are asking for financial help. There is currently no Hematologist in the whole country of Belize so he is in a private health care facility where an Oncologist and General Doctor are assisting him. We are however thankful for their outstanding help. The medical expenses are too much for my family and the medication and blood and platelets transfusions are causing financial stress for us to keep the positivity around him. We are raising funds to clear the hospital bills in Belize to stabalize him so he can be flown to Guatemala to a Hematologist to continue treatment and battle this syndrome.

Seeing our dad suffering is a stabbing to our hearts and we would greatly appreciate any help given.

Hallo, mein Name ist Yasmin und ich bin die Tochter von Filiberto Castañeda, bei dem vor einem Monat das Myelodysplastische Syndrom diagnostiziert wurde.

Mein Vater ist ein 74-jähriger Agronom im Ruhestand und lebt in dem kleinen Land Belize. Er ist immer liebevoll, humorvoll, hilfsbereit und äußerst bescheiden und erledigt leidenschaftlich gern jede Hausarbeit oder Pflicht, die er erledigen kann, um etwas für den Tag und seine Familie zu tun.

Man könnte sagen, er hat sein Leben gelebt, aber das hat er nicht. Er hat sein ganzes Leben lang hart gearbeitet, um für meine Mutter, meine 3 Brüder und mich zu sorgen. Jetzt, wo er endlich im Ruhestand ist und bereit war, Zeit mit seiner Frau, seinen Kindern und Enkelkindern zu verbringen, befiel ihn diese seltene Blutkrankheit und unsere Welten brachen zusammen.

Das Problem bei dieser seltenen Krebsart ist, dass sie sein Knochenmark und die Produktion seiner roten und weißen Blutkörperchen und Blutplättchen angreift. Er kämpft unter Tränen um sein Leben, da er nicht mehr sprechen kann und wir ihn aufgrund seiner niedrigen Blutplättchenzahl nicht einmal berühren können, um ihn vor Infektionen zu schützen. Als wir sein Krankenhauszimmer betreten, in dem er unter Quarantäne steht, tragen wir Handschuhe und Schuhüberzieher, damit er sich nicht ansteckt. Es ist eine surreale Zeit für uns.

Neben Gottes Gebeten bitten wir um finanzielle Hilfe. Derzeit gibt es in ganz Belize keinen Hämatologen, also ist er in einer Gesundheitseinrichtung, wo ihm nur ein Onkologe und ein Allgemeinarzt helfen können. Die medizinischen Kosten sind für meine Familie zu hoch und die Medikamente und Blut- und Thrombozytentransfusionen verursachen finanziellen Stress für uns, um die positive Einstellung zu ihm aufrechtzuerhalten. Wir sammeln Geld, um die Krankenhausrechnungen in Belize zu begleichen und ihn zu stabilisieren, damit er nach Guatemala zu einem Hämatologen geflogen werden kann, wo er richtig versorgt wird und hoffentlich hilft, dieses Syndrom zu bekämpfen.

Unseren Vater leiden zu sehen, ist ein Stich ins Herz und wir wären für jede Hilfe sehr dankbar.
