Fight For Carolyn

One day while on my way home from work in the Army, I called my mom like I did every day.  She told me of a pain she was having in her pelvic area, and that it seemed to come and go, usually after eating.  For a few weeks, she seemed to think it was gastrointestinal, but eventually the pain kept getting so bad that she couldn't take it any longer.  She owns a business, so she needed to be feeling her best to keep up with it!

After a visit to the doctor, they found out that her uterus was much larger than it should have been, and that it had grown rapidly.  She was advised to get a hysterectomy.

My unit approved my request to fly across the country to be with her during her surgery, as she had never undergone a surgery before.  As her only child, I couldn't let her be alone!

My aunt and my grandma came along as well, and as my mom was in the recovery room getting ready to wake up, the doctor came in and told us the news; cancer.

At first no one could tell us what type of cancer it was!  No one seemed to have seen anything like it, but after consulting with many of the best doctors in the country, we found out that my mom has a rare and aggressive form of cancer called Leiomyosarcoma.

Eventually, we found a doctor who was willing to help!  The military even graciously moved me to be closer to her.

Despite the full hysterectomy that she had undergone, small pieces of the tumor had remained inside, and they quickly began growing again.

My mom had undergone many chemo treatments.  The day she called to tell me that her hair had begun falling out was emotional for all of us. I mean, just months ago she was her normal self, running a business that she had started on her own, and doing it well!

At one point the tumors seem to have shrunk, but after a few months the treatments stopped working.  Because of this, the doctor has stopped the chemo treatments in order to allow her body to heal up and try some other methods.

Right now she feels great!  The tumors she has are located in her pelvic region, but the doctors are unable to remove them. The doctor doesn't seem to be all too optimistic right now because of how rapidly the tumors grow, but we are determined.

My mom is the most hard-working woman I know.  She is trying everything she can to keep her business, all while fighting this terrible disease.  So far, she has been paying for almost everything out of her own pocket, and it breaks my heart that I'm not a billionaire.  This is me reaching out, asking for help when my mom won't.  She never wants to be a burden on anyone, but right now she needs it.

Every single penny that is raised will go directly to my mom.  I'm hoping to raise enough to help her get the next medication that the doctor wants to try, but if we get more, it will help cover the costs of some of her medical bills.

Thank you to each and every one of you, and from the bottom of my heart, I appreciate you.
