It is with a very sad & Heavy heart I Have to relay the news That Mike has lost his battle with this horrible disease. He has fought courageously never giving up showing what a wonderful man he was. Through it all he was more worried about his family than himself. He never lost his courage, laughter and amazing spirit . His never ending love for his family will always be present. Thank you all for your support. The foundation that helps these heros does not recognize the disease he fought at this time and the family is left with many bills . STAND FOR SOMETHING: Nobody had to tell retired ESU Truck 1 member Det. Mike Hanson to “believe in something.” Nobody had to tell him to “sacrifice everything” when he responded to the World Trade Center on 9/11. He just did it.
Seventeen years later, a 9/11-related neurological condition has left Mike confined to a wheelchair. But when his Truck 1, 13 Pct. and NYPD Video Unit sisters and brothers stood to salute the flag and remember the fallen this year, Mike rose to his feet to join them. His wife and and daughters supported him, just like the countless police families who support their loved ones every day as they risk their own safety to protect their communities.
Nobody told Mike to stand, and nobody would have blamed him if he hadn’t. He just did it.
