Fight for the Rights of 600,000 LAUSD Students!

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT RAISING FUNDS FOR THE FREEDOM FOUNDATION'S LAWSUIT THAT WAS FILED ON APRIL 1st.

We are California Students United (CSU), a parent organization fighting for the rights of over 600,000 Los Angeles Unified District (LAUSD) public school students. We believe LAUSD families must have a seat at the table when it comes to decisions regarding the students' education. This power can no longer be left solely in the hands of the district and the teachers' union.

Most urgently, students must be allowed to return to school in-person and full-time! They have been out of the classroom for over a year. With the worst of the COVID pandemic behind us, we are faced with a new pandemic: the tragic rise in students dealing with anxiety, depression, isolation, drug addiction, and obesity. Suicide rates have sky-rocketed amongst school-aged children. On the most basic level, a whole generation of Los Angeles children are falling behind academically, those in underserved communities suffering the most.

According to the LAUSD Students' Bill of Rights, adopted on June 23, 2020, all students have a right to a “quality, well-rounded, robust education that prepares them for life beyond high school.” This Bill of Rights--authored by students--was co-sponsored by Board Vice President Jackie Goldberg and Board Members Mónica García, Scott M. Schmerelson, Nick Melvoin, Kelly Gonez, and adopted unanimously by the Board of Education.

However, now that more than 600,000 LAUSD students need these rights to be upheld more than ever, those in charge are letting them down! These students can not afford any more lost time learning in the classroom with their peers. We will spare no effort!

CSU has retained Lee Andelin and Arie Spangler of  Aannestad, Andelin & Corn, the San Diego-based firm that  won a temporary restraining order against the state last month. The purpose of the suit is to force LAUSD to comply with its obligations under existing laws and agreements and to provide a reopening plan that follows the science instead of UTLA's agenda. This is where our fight begins...but it will not end there! Subsequent legal action will follow this preliminary lawsuit.

Please support CSU's fight to empower parents and to advocate for the best interests of all LAUSD students. Donations to our legal fund will directly impact our ability to influence the LAUSD reopening plans through litigation and other advocacy. The district has repeatedly breached its legal obligations to provide quality in-person education and services. Your financial support to hold them accountable.
