The World Health Organization has expressed concern over the resurgence of Covid-19 infections in many African countries, and health systems are seriously unprepared for an increase in cases. Currently (June 24, 2021) Cases are on an upward trend in 14 African countries and in the past week, new cases rose by more than 30% in eight countries.
In spring 2020, as the COVID-19 epidemic spread globally and African countries saw their first cases, we raised concern that low and middle-income sub-Saharan African countries with fragile health care infrastructure were ill prepared for a massive increase in the number of cases. In June 2021, we seem to be facing increases, and vaccine programs severely trail need.
Supporting Treatment of Severe Viral Infections in Africa (VISSTA) aims to relieve suffering and assist the work of African health professionals in the hospital and clinic setting by raising funds to purchase medical supplies used to care for people with severe viral infections and personal protective equipment to protect health care workers and reduce nosocomial viral spread.
Our latest appeal is to purchase oxygen concentrators and tanks, continuous pulse oximetry monitors, N95 masks, and scrubs in order to support patients breathing in the absence of piped oxygen and protect HCW from nosocomial spread of COVID-19
