This is Pappy.
Pappy, born Patrick William Aguon Cruz and raised on the Island of Guam, is the youngest of 6 siblings. He is 32 years old.
If you asked anyone to describe Pappy, they would simply say, “He’s Pap” followed by a soft chuckle. He means so much to the people who know him.
Often humble and soft-spoken, the island of Guam raised him well. He lets his actions speak for themselves, putting his family, friends and neighbors above himself, always. If everyone shared Pappy’s values, the world would be a much better place.
In the family, he’s known as Uncle Pappy - fun, silly, reliable and loving. He’s always taken care of all his nephews and nieces and is well loved by all 16 of them! Now after all these years as Uncle Pappy, he’s blessed with the opportunity to become a father himself. In April 2019, Pappy will be a father..
But in March 2018, Pappy started to develop an abnormal cough, was experiencing chest pains and noticed he had realized he had started to lose weight. Upon getting checked he was told he had Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) or a hole in his heart, a birth defect that never went away causing him to have shortness of breath. The hole is in a complicated area forcing him to need open heart surgery.
Furthermore he discovered that there was a growth inside of him…
After 3 months of being tested and dragged from appointment to appointment without answers, Pappy finally learned that he also has Stage 4 Lung Cancer that spread to his stomach and to his pelvis.
In these months of waiting, Pappy started getting headaches and had trouble with his vision which we learned was because of his heart condition. The ASD is causing blood clots that are spreading throughout his body and up to his brain causing him to have mini strokes.
The doctors tell us this cancer is non-curable…but treatable.
Pappy is ready to FIGHT! and he needs your help. This fight will be long and hard, but he has faith in God and in himself that he can and will overcome all of the obstacles in his way!
In the next couple weeks, he will put his trust in the hands of a team of doctors in the Philippines to determine how to treat his body. Will he need open heart surgery or should they treat the cancer first? There are still a lot of questions to be asked and as we’ve seen, so much can happen in such a short amount of time so we must act quickly.
