Fibroid Awareness Documentary Pre-production

There is much a story to render, the disparities of being a Black woman living with uterine fibroids. Black women are 3-5x more likely to have fibroids than any other race of women. Black women are 4x’s more likely to undergo a hysterectomy than white women. As Hilda Hutcherson, M.D. states, there are alternative treatments for severe fibroids that are less invasive and preserve fertility. With my film, I am exploring those alternative treatments; not only for myself, but to amplify the need for more awareness surrounding choice through options that have not been widely known to my community of Black women. 

Fibroids have knowingly impacted my life since 2016. From then and currently, I dedicate my time to exploring alternative treatments. There is dance between Western and Eastern medicine that I’ve become to feel at ease with. The two can absolutely coexist for healing and this dance is what I am shining a light on.
