Chikuni Education Project, Zambia
Donation protected
My name is Fiachra Tuckey and I'm a 5th year student in Belvedere College in Dublin. This summer I hope to travel to Chikuni in Zambia as part of a group of twenty students to help out with an Education Project that is located in the Chikuni Mission, a mission set up by Jesuits to support local people.
Each one of the students travelling has to raise €4,000 to make the trip.
So far I've spent 2 weekends bag packing and I have also been to my own primary school (Gaelscoil Bhaile Brigín Abú!!) where I delivered a talk to the pupils about the project and they subsequently had a cake sake to help raise funds. Go raibh mile maith agaibhse, is mór an cabhair é sin.
I've also given a talk in Gaelscoil Ros Eo and Gaelscoil an Bhradáin Feasa and they are organising fundraisers to support me also. If any other school would like the presentation delivered as Gaeilge nó as Béarla I'd be delighted to drop in.
The main aims of our trip are:
To support school children in a radio school - a rural outstation where an educational curriculum is broadcast over a radio for a few hours each day. This radio allows children access education in remote areas and balance that with normal household chores.
We also intend to provide funds for teacher training so that the pupils will have access to a teacher and not just a radio.
Our third aim is to provide some funds towards providing infrastructure at the Chikuni Mission, previous efforts have resulted in the construction of school building.
The Belvedere students on this trip and on future trips will also support local children with English, Maths and cultural exchange through games, music and dance.
