Baby Maverick in NICU

from brigitta’s latest update 9/3:

Maverick has had an awesome night last night and a busy morning today!
We were finally taken off the EEG last night therefore I got to hold him for the first time ever!! Words can't express..so I wont even try to describe that moment.
Shout out to NICU nurses, it took five nurses and Cody's help to move Maverick from his bed two feet over to his mama. And 45 mins just to get him settled back in bed. These nurses are truly heros, and I'm forever grateful.
Mav is doing well!! Lots of small steps, all in the right direction!
Still no seizures! We are off EEG and most of the meds that were making him incredibly sleepy. Now that he is more awake we can see those gorgeous eyes.
In order to assess the status of his inefection and his brain bleed, We NEED an MRI.
The antibiotics are doing their job and fighting off the sepsis, our last growth cultures came back negative which is good. However the type of bacterial infection he had/has was one of two that can cause neonatal meningitis. So we need the MRI to tell us if his CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) was infected or not.
We are down to a 1 on the Nitric!! This is great news because as soon as we wean off of the nitroc we can go to MRI.
His Lung xray was much improved today!! So we will continue the same course of action to help that lung open up and stay clear.
Mav has needed several platelet infusions since coming off ECMO. This can be normal right after ECMO but his continued need might indicate that something else could be eating away his platelets, which is not good. So we are going to do a Doppler test today to see if he has any clots hiding out and stealing platelets from his blood.
Mav is getting breastmilk feeds, and peeing/pooping all on his own and doing great!! His urinary catheter was removed this morning!
A few hours ago Mav gave us a little scare, he broke out in blisters from head to toe. He is alright and we are just watching it right now. We think he had a reaction to the heated light above his bed. He seems to be getting better by the min.

Our goal today is to test Negative for blood clots and wean completely off the nitric so we can get to MRI!

Again we cannot express how grateful we are for your continued prayers and love! You all are so good to us! Thank you so very much!!

Specific Mav prayers:
No seizures!
No blood clots!
Lungs to improve and stay clear!
Wean to 0 on nitric.
MRI

*Update written from brigitta 8/31 Maverick had a great night! At 10 this morning he was officially seizure free for 48hours!! This is a huge gain! Being seizure free means they will start to wean him off of the seizures meds, this is a slow process and can be tricky so we still need lots of prayers that he doesn't have refractory seizures during the wean.
Yesterday Mav's O2 dropped and a chest Xray showed a partial lung collapse. His lung looks great this morning! Doctors are happy with his breathing and lung improvement and will start to change some settings on his vent today and wean some nitric to see how he tolerates taking on more independent breathing.
Maverick looks like his Daddy but he got his veins from his mama, he had to get another new IV this morning and it didn't bother him at all.
I'm doing okay I'm walking (probably too much) and moving around a bit easier. Going to a follow up Tuesday to see how infection is. Pain control is going well.
Cody and I are just amazed and humbled by the love and kindness of others. We are deeply appreciative of your prayer, well wishes, and support. Please keep them coming. The doctors guesstimate we will be here about a month more, we are just trying to be patient and trust God through this.

*Update 8/29
Maverick had an operation to remove the ECMO tubes and is now off of ECMO and back on a ventilator and doing well with that.
He is having seizures and we are needing the seizures to subside to indicate his brain bleed is clotting in order to heal.
We don’t have answers yet on how this brain bleed and seizure activity will affect him long term but have been told he will likely have motor deficits to some degree.
Maverick will get all the therapy in the world to help him.
As for his sepsis- the antibiotics are working and the bacteria has stopped growing, but he’s still fighting that as well.
Please be in prayer that his seizures will subside.
Brigitta was finally discharged today and will be monitored outpatient, she is still recovering and still needs to be watched closely.
Brigitta and Cody will be able to stay close to the hospital to be close to Maverick.

Maverick is 9 days old and his parents still have not been able to hold him in their arms.
Please continue to pray and share
Brigitta and Cody are extremely thankful for the outpouring of love and care they are receiving, thank you so so much.

*Update 8/25- Maverick is on IV antibiotics to fight the sepsis, (he is septic) these antibiotics will take 21 days to administer.
so as of 8/25 we know they have at least 21 days remaining in NICU
and he is still on ECMO.
please continue to share and to pray!

Following complications during the delivery of her first child, Brigitta had to have an emergency C-section that saved her life and the life of the baby.
It was discovered that she had been bleeding internally, and this came with complications for the baby.
Maverick is fighting an infection in the blood (bacteremia) and is septic.
The specific bacteria that his tiny new immune system is trying to attack is an antibiotic resistant strain, making things very very difficult for his system to fight. Per the treatment team it will be a long and hard battle for baby Maverick.

Maverick is on ECMO, which is a machine pumping the blood in his body to let his little lungs and heart rest, and he's also being treated with antibiotics.
ECMO and NICU come at a very high cost..

He is facing at least a month and maybe longer in the NICU, and future medical treatment and unknown needs.
Needless to say, these medical costs are going to take a toll.
Medical bills along with the cost of food, gas, and other expenses will all add up very quickly.

Brigitta and Cody are kind and loving people who have always helped others and shown love and support, and it's our time to step up and help them in return.
Anything given to this fund will go directly to them and help lessen the burden during this difficult time.
