Our names are Ryan and Mikayla and we are fundraising for our dear friends Dale and Kimberly.
This is a love story that started as teenagers. Dale and Kimberly due to family situations had to go their separate ways. They got married to other people and started families that turned out to not be their forevers. They say no one gets over their first love and after 2 decades apart Dale found Kimberly on Facebook. After 6 months of talking only and making him work for it they embarked on a 2nd chance at 1st love. They married 2 years later and combined their families and started their modern day Brady Bunch with 6 children Daniel, Duane, Ren, Veronica, Cameron, and Bentley.
They both work hard to support this big family and watch their kids grow. A few years back, Dale went through some major heart problems, but the heart hospital performed miracles and Dale ended up with a pacemaker and eventually was able to return to work and help Kimberly to ease the financial strain.
Dale and Kimberly watch proudly as the kids continue to grow and leave the nest and set out on their own paths.
Anyone that knows Dale knows he's a devoted Kansas City Chiefs fan. While watching the super bowl he got the shivers and did not feel good. Even contemplated going to bed and he never would want to miss a minute of his beloved chiefs.
He got very sick for a few days with flu like symptoms and eventually ended up being rushed to the hospital by ambulance. He was in 3 different hospitals in just 3 days. The 3rd being the heart hospital. Many tests, scans, x-rays, labs, MRI, and cameras down his throat determined he had an infection that had attached itself to his pacemaker and to his aortic valve. Pieces of this infection broke off and acted just like blood clots and traveled to his brain and caused what the MRI report stated as "too many to count" mini strokes all over his brain.
After a week in the hospital, he declined massively. He was bedridden, had a feeding tube, on a ventilator, and was unresponsive. 7 specialist doctors on his case ALL agreed to not move forward with any lifesaving techniques stating that it would be inhumane to do all that to him. They all agreed he was dying and to make all the calls and alert loved ones. Kimberly & the children were devastated. Everyone was devastated. She opened up visitation from anyone that wanted to say their goodbyes and show their love and support.
Dale is a funny, sarcastic, quick -witted, snarky, playful and fun guy to be around. He always described himself as "I'm the nicest asshole you’ll ever meet." He loves his family and friends with his whole heart. He is very protective of those he loves.
Dale had so many people come to say their final words. So many people showing love to him and his family. What a wave of emotions as they had to start thinking about end of life choices and funeral arrangements. Most of us thinking “we just can’t picture Kimberly without Dale.”
The next morning, Dale opened his eyes and was able to communicate by blinking eyes and hand squeezing. He was able to follow commands. All 7 specialists now change their minds. They said Dale is a lucky man and this is a true miracle. They said they don't see this happen very often but he was granted one.
He faces removal of the infected pacemaker, open heart surgery to replace the valve, mass amounts of rehab in a facility to regain strength, temporary pacemaker to his neck, and when this is all cleared up, he will need a new pacemaker put back in.
The doctors are unsure of his future clarity. He has some confusion. Some can be from the infection in his body. Only time will tell how much is from the strokes to the brain.
The family is so thankful for this miracle. Its like Dale and Kimberly were given a 3rd chance at this first love all over again. Their story isn't over yet. They have more chapters to go.
They are facing some major financial strains. Way more than Kimberly can handle. Dale and Kimberly have always worked so hard and are too proud (and stubborn) to ask for help. Half of their children are still at home needing their support. Dale and Kimberly would give their shirt off of their back to ANYONE in need. Despite their insane schedules with kids school activities, they still always take the time to check up on everybody and see how life is going.
Dale is facing a very long road ahead of life threatening procedures due to his high risk status. He's facing a long road of rehabilitation. He's facing the possibility of never being able to go to the only place he wants to go to and that's home with his family.
Let’s help Kimberly be able to focus on Dale and his recovery instead of having to stress about bills, all of the medical expenses to come, and expenses that will come with commuting back and forth to the hospital.
