Dear friends,
SOS! Our friend Kay Maynard (Marge Hageman’s oldest granddaughter and Scott and Debbie Maynard’s oldest daughter) needs our help!
Since early 2012, Kay has been struggling with pain in her jaw joints. She was referred to an oral surgeon, who treated her for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and prescribed a bite splint, which did little to solve her symptoms.
During the fall of 2014, Kay's mom noticed a visual change in the way that Kay was talking. The Maynards requested the initial x-rays from 2012 and showed it to the oral surgeon, asking if the cause of the change was the bite splint. The surgeon did not answer the question but suggested an orthodontist.
The Maynards’ family doctor suggested a TMJ specialist in Roanoke. He did an initial consult/exam and said that Kay needed surgery, which was more than he could do, and referred her to the Piper Clinic in Florida. Since the spring of 2015, Kay’s pain has been steadily increasing. She visited the Piper Clinic in December and finally received some answers.
For an unknown reason (possibly a trauma incurred in the past), Kay’s condyles have degenerated quite significantly. In addition to the breakdown of the bone, the discs in her jaw joints have been dislocated, causing the formation of a pseudo disc and forcing her jaw out of position. As a result, her teeth have started to shift position and currently only touch partially in the back.
To correct her bite and repair her jaw joint, Kay will need surgery as soon as possible and funds are very tight for the Maynards. This surgery, which will be performed in St. Petersburg, Florida (13 hours away from the Maynard’s home in Virginia) has to be paid for up front, and the doctor’s fees are around $47,000 dollars. This does NOT include hospital costs. Kay does have insurance, and the Maynards will fill out an insurance claim; however, the treatment center does not take insurance, so none of the original cost and only a part of the numerous other costs (hospital costs, anesthesiologist, orthodontist, chiropractor) will be covered. After surgery, Kay will receive follow-up care and further treatment for at least the next six months. If surgery is not successful and/or Kay does not heal well, she may require a second surgery. Additionally, there will be travel costs.
Many of you know Kay and her family, and I am sure that you would want to join us in prayer for them (Scott and Debbie Maynard and their 6 children). Satan is bombarding them with all kinds of serious medical problems (Lyme disease, diabetes, seizures and this TMJ deterioration issue); however, their faith remains strong. Nevertheless, there is great pressure on them. Whether it is through prayer or financial contribution, you support is greatly appreciated.
We need to raise close to $60,000 dollars by February 1st. Will you please help us to help Kay and the Maynard family by donating today? All of the funds we raise will go directly towards surgical costs and medical care and care related costs (i.e. travel, lodgings). Thank you from deep in our hearts for your generosity, your support, and your prayers!
Love,
Jan Bottiglia
