It is impossible to sum up the legacy of Sheila Wharton and the terrible absence she leaves behind. She was an extraordinary person, who lived a life of integrity and service as a nurse and midwife, a social worker and play therapist, a political activist, Buddhist nun, and teacher. She was also the loving mother of Toby, a cherished sister, and a friend to so many across the globe.
Sheila was down-to-earth and playful, and with a great generosity of spirit. True to her nature, she never liked people to fuss about her, let alone remunerate her for her time. In her later years, her work as a meditation and compassion teacher expanded more and more and she continued to support individuals one-on-one, while also tirelessly fighting for peace, environmental and social justice and against the death penalty. Because of this selfless generosity, she lived a very simple life and did not leave any money for her final farewell. Her son, Toby, is now faced with the unexpected cost of the funeral and memorial expenses.
We invite her vast community—friends, family, and especially her students—to give whatever they feel they can towards helping Toby give Sheila the simple, dignified, and loving send-off she deserves, a small gesture of gratitude for the compassion she showed throughout her life.

May all beings be happy, may all beings be peaceful, may all beings be free from suffering.
