Fernando's Semester Abroad in Paris

Donation protected
As I grow older, I’ve learned that the secret to success is preparation and determination. Many believe that they got “lucky,” and others; it was just meant to be. However, I believe things happen because we make them happen. Things happen because we are prepared and determined. We go knock on opportunity’s door.

Today, I reach out to you to share a huge milestone in my path to become a Dance Educator. Myself and five other friends have been selected to participate in the University’s “Dance in Paris” Program next semester. Although dance did not have its beginning in Paris, the city served as a mecca for the development of many famous artists, performers, and even today is considered one of the most inspiring cities in the world. Needless to say, I am excited.

As part of the program, I will have the opportunity to live in the city of Paris. I get my own metro pass and it is my responsibility to arrive to all my classes, which are located around the city. This Education Abroad Program is not a typical “six-week program inside a college campus in a different part of the world.” This program builds up responsibility, independence, and fortitude, upon dance technique, dance composition, and dance artistry. For five months, I will be a resident of the city of Paris. Additionally, we will expand our studies to Berlin, Germany; Amsterdam, Netherlands; and Rouen, France.

I invite you to picture your passion, the career path that you chose for yourself and think of the professionals in your field that inspired you to do better everyday. Imagine learning from these individuals, asking them questions, and just getting to know them. Now, imagine doing all these in the beautiful lands of Europe.

The University’s Administration and our faculty advisor, Michael Foley, have worked hard to maintain the cost of the program as low as possible. As a matter of fact, the cost of credit-per-hour is the same as if I were to stay in Tampa, Florida. However, when creating an Education Abroad Program there are unavoidable fees, and as you all know, the fare-exchange difference. The total cost of the program is $12,000; this includes tuition, program fees, Paris Metro pass, performances and excursions, class materials, housing and partial board, 24/7 support via International Assistance Line, and International Medical and Evacuation Insurance. The program fee does not include airfare, travel insurance, and the French Visa to get into the country. As of today, and after a year of savings and applying to scholarships, I have $9,000 to cover the cost of the program, a purchased and insured one-way ticket to Paris, and the cost of the Visa in my savings account in order to purchase it when I receive the confirmation from the Education Abroad Office.

I am reaching out to you today to ask for your support in this new journey of mine. If you, or anybody you may know would like to invest in my education, please click the "donate" button. If you are not able to donate, please still send me a message with your email. I will be starting a mailing list sharing my challenges, successes, and opportunities of being in Paris, France for five months.

Thank you for your time, consideration, and donations.
