It's with a heavy heart that I write this about a great man who was taken too early from us all. Early last week the world lost Fernando " Freddy" Machado unexpectedly in Germany. Freddy was a man who served this country longer than I have been alive as a Government contractor. From the moment I met him he made me and anyone new feel like part of the team. You couldn't be near Fred and not smile or laugh. Whether it was one of his jokes or just his happy and easy going personailty, you always knew it was going to be a good day when he was around. He was one of those rare people who could make a tough situation, long hours, or a bad day seem great.
I learned years ago that just because someone doesn't wear a military uniform doesn't mean they don't serve this great nation like so many in uniform do. Fred served this country with honor, dignity, and dedication and will always be remembered as a Brother to so many. Day in and day out from all over the world Freddy provided our nation and military with essential and critical communication tools. His work and dedication will not be forgotten as we all morn the loss. Rather than be sad, I know Freddy would have wanted us all to smile and remember his life and appreciate all those who have served like him. Our government contractors play such a critical role in our military and often don't get the credit and recognition they deserve.
In these tough times myself and some of the old members of our work team are asking for donations to help offset the cost Fred's family is going to be paying to get to Germany and for arrangements when he is returned home. The holiday's are a time for giving and it would mean so much to all of us who served with Freddy if you could donate to help his family honor him the way he deserves.
Freddy, we are all going to miss you and what you brought to this world! These days you don't find many people like you that mean what they say and will do anything to help a friend in need. You have brought joy to so many and the memory of you will continue that tradition long into the future! Rest easy and know that as you look down on us all from heaven we are eternally greatful for your dedication, commitement, and most importantly friendship! Keep smiling and laughing!
