Fernando Daza's Study-Service Term in Arizona
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Fernando Daza, and I am a first-generation college student at Goshen College, and West Noble Alumni. I am seeking your support to fund my Study-Service Term (SST) in the Navajo Nation this summer. This immersive program offers a unique opportunity to learn about the Navajo people’s history, spirituality, and culture while engaging in service assignments, homestays, and cultural visits in Arizona. As part of my undergraduate curriculum, I am required to complete a study abroad program. However, due to my migratory status being in process and tight academic schedule, this program is my only opportunity for cultural immersion. The cost for this experience is $4,535, and I am in need of at least $1,500 to make it possible.
My Leadership and Service Journey
Throughout my time at Goshen College, I have committed myself to leadership and service in various capacities. As a leader of the Latino Student Union, I organize events that celebrate and share Latin American culture, fostering connections within our campus community. As an educator in the Prevention Intervention Network, I presented an Active Bystander Curriculum, which boosted students’ confidence in addressing harmful situations by 29.1%. Additionally, I volunteer as a Natural Helper at the Center for Healing and Hope, leading financial wellness workshops to empower immigrant communities. These roles reflect my dedication to creating inclusive spaces and addressing structural challenges, values that align with the goals of this SST program.
Why This Experience Matters
Participating in the Navajo Nation SST will deepen my understanding of Indigenous histories and structural injustices, enriching my double major in Business and Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies. The program will help me develop cultural competency, active listening, and conflict resolution skills while connecting me with the Navajo community’s spiritual and cultural perspectives.
Your contribution will go directly toward the cost of this SST experience. Any amount, whether $5 or $500, brings me closer to making this experience a reality. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this campaign with others who might be able to help would mean the world to me.
