GoFundMe for Fernando Cantu

My name is Efrain Cantu and I am one of Fernando Cantu's many grandchildren. I am creating this GoFundMe page to share my grandfather's legacy and to help my grandmother in this troubling time.

Fernando Cantu passed away early Easter Sunday morning at 3:00 AM, shortly after the demolition of the Crawford power plant smokestack which we believe could be a primary cause of his passing. He came out to his garden on Saturday afternoon, and by 3 a.m. on Sunday he was dead. He was 78 years old and suffered from asthma and COPD but he lived a normal life and his death was very abrupt.

Fernando Cantu was a loving husband, brother, friend, grandparent, and great-grandparent. He leaves behind his beloved wife Maricela Cantu, as well as his five children, and 20+ grand and great-grandchildren. If you knew Fernando Cantu, you would know that he was not just a loving person but a humble and caring soul too. For almost 50 years living on 32nd and Harding, he touched the hearts of those in the community, generations to generations. He always put a smile on everyone's face and those who have passed by his house know what I'm taking about.

On Saturday, the day before Easter and the passing of Fernando Cantu, Hilco Redevelopment Partners demolished what was a smokestack of the old Crawford power plant. They did not have the proper safety precautions for the residents, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic. This resulted in what was polluted air in the neighborhood of Little Village, 3 blocks away from the residence of Fernando Cantu. We can only imagine what was in that smokestack. 

I created a GoFundMe page for those who would like to contribute to Fernando Cantu's legacy, and his beloved wife Maricela Cantu while we continue to seek answers.

Siempre ponía una sonrisa en la cara de todos y aquellos que habían pasado por su casa sabían de lo que estaba hablando.
