Feral Cat Caught In Snare Trap

UPDATE 5/12 -

We want to thank everyone so much for the donations and for all the messages. My mom contacted the original animal hospital and they are offering her a 10% discount on what she spent at their location so that is great! They will also be working with us to find Beasty Boy a sanctuary so that he can live safely and thrive once he is healed. Our regular vet has high hopes for his recovery and they have been wonderful also. This is something we have been actively researching. He just had a visit on the 5th and he still has more healing to go. His next visit is in 3 weeks, I've posted his updated vet bills below. I will get an updated photo of his wound posted shortly as well.

I’ve started this on behalf of my mom who has always helped any animal that makes its way to her either injured or sick. She has spent so much of her life tirelessly taking care of everyone and every animal more than she takes care of herself.

However, it has been getting harder and harder for her to be able to help as she doesn’t have funds when it comes to these kinds of emergencies, and she just really needs help with this. Most of the time, she can handle a sick animal herself, but this required emergency medical care and the costs keep rising for this feral cat.

This is Beasty Boy and he had been passing through at night well over a year ago but then stopped. He showed up at the beginning of March late one night and she caught images of him. She noticed something tight around his abdomen and was finally able to catch him in a humane trap on April 8th.

The next day she took him to the only vet that had availability. Normally we would use our vet who is wonderful and costs less, but unfortunately, he was out of town for over a week. So Beasty Boy was taken to a great but more expensive hospital. He was sedated through the carrier, and they removed what was found to be a metal snare trap.

He is VERY wild, so to change his bandages they must sedate him each time. The initial cost was not what we expected, and each bandage change is close to $200, which the doctor initally said that he will need to change every 2 days for about 3 more weeks. This changed though and so now the visits will be further a part.

My mom didn’t realize it would take this long to heal because, in the beginning, she had not seen the true damage of what this trap did to him!! She JUST saw his waist size during the April 14th bandage change and we were all shocked! They estimate this trap was on him for months and his abdomen will probably never go back to normal size. His bowels were impacted initially but has been able to go since this was taken off him.

We are actively searching for this cat’s mate that used to travel with him. She hasn’t been around in a while. Months ago, she was caught, spayed, and released which is protocol for feral cats. Although this is very upsetting if people are out setting traps and harming these animals. My mom did pay for her to be fixed, and her vet charged $700 for that along with a rabies shot and other vaccinations.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and will go towards the care of this cat as he will need to be with her much longer than expected.

I will answer any questions I can and will post updates as we get more information.

Updated photo of wound - after removing bandage. The wound won't be covered as it was causing it to get infected and healing too slow.
