Fennel Farm is a private 17-acre horse farm in Upper Bucks County, Pennsylvania. We offer retirement boarding, riding lessons, and summer camp, and we also take in unwanted senior horses that often require significant rehabilitation.

This week, we said a sad but peaceful farewell to our matriarch of the farm, Duchess. She was 38-years-old. We bought her off a Craigslist ad when she was 35. It cost more to euthanize her humanely than it did to buy her -- but then, that's how we end up with most of our older horses. It's cheaper for people to get rid of them than to take on the burden of their care as they age.

Currently, we have four rescues under our care that came to us from a variety of circumstances: Sully, Teddy, Ghost, and Star. In addition to the regular care associated with older horses, our beloved crew (including Duncan, a very sickly Appaloosa who we laid to rest early this spring) has racked up quite the outstanding vet bill!

Our wonderful local veterinary practice, Quakertown Vet Clinic, is working with us on a payment plan, but it would be a blessing to be able to pay off a significant amount of our balance (which currently stands at $3,971). Every month we put $500 toward the balance... two months ago we managed $1500! But with the revolving cost of our sweet seniors, we can never seem to get it down to zero.

Any amount would be incredibly helpful! We've fundraised in the past, specifically for Sully's frontonasal bone flap surgery at MidAtlantic Equine Hospital and Duncan's care, and while people were outstandingly generous, their veterinary expenses were still a large financial burden for our small farm.
