Fenced In (Short Film)
Donation protected
Fenced In focuses on a young Black woman who navigates corporate America but realizes she hasn’t been staying true to who she really is because society has conditioned her to believe she won’t be accepted if she does. Diving deeper into this close identity study, her internal self begins to seep out as she tackles constructing a fence around her home.
My name is Ashley Dean. I’m the Director, Writer, and Producer of Fenced In. I’ve wanted to explore this story since I was a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2021. My sisters and I grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood, and with that, unfortunately, came all the microaggressions placed on minorities like us, especially in the workplace. I briefly worked in corporate America and with the several months I was in that field, the prejudices began to show alongside having to diminish who we were as Black people to make space for others to thrive. At least, that’s what society was making it seem like we had to do.
Fenced In is a film that deliberately talks back to those very people in society who believe being a Black person, a Black woman in this space is not welcome. I want to put stories like Fenced In out there in the world because it's been far too long that Black women, Black people, have had to suppress who they are in spaces like the workplace, schools, and simply walking down the street to make others feel more comfortable. I think it’s time we see how these negative suppressors affect one’s identity and how learning to just exhibit all aspects of who you are as a person, a Black person, a Black woman in this world can still have success even if society says otherwise.
This experimental, dramatic, horror film explores themes such as the nature of code switching, Critical Race Theory, self-identification, and W.E.B. Du Bois’ concept of the White Veil.
