Feliz cumpleaños a Mario Guevara: Mensaje desde Folkston

I'm Mario Guevara, the Hispanic reporter who was arrested during a protest against immigration raids here in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. I am writing this on my 48th birthday, and I never thought I'd spend it behind bars like a criminal. ICE refuses to release me because, to them, I'm a pain in their necks; a thorn in their side as I daily exposed all the injustices federal agents committed on the state's streets against members of our vulnerable Latino community. My dedication to my work cost me my freedom, and now I'm about to be deported after more than three months in jail. I've not only been a victim of extortion, but also psychological torture. I was kept for 70 days in solitary confinement in a small cell where I could only go out into the sun for two hours a day to get fresh air. They never turned off the lights, and I was completely alone. They put detainees there who are punished for fighting or violating prison rules, but this wasn't my case. ICE simply decided I deserved to be there, period. I suffered sleep disturbances and even reached the point of wishing I was dead. Thank God, the psychologist at Folkston helped me understand that I was depressed. They are about to expel me from the country, and although I'm leaving with my head held high, because for almost 22 years I did things right, I'm also leaving with a broken heart bearing the separation from my family. The government has humiliated and trampled on me as it saw fit, but I forgive the authorities for that. Racial hatred prevents them from seeing us immigrants as human beings. This bitter experience has marked us not only morally but also financially. We have lost so much, but God continues to sustain us with his love and infinite mercy. Soy Mario Guevara, el reportero hispano que fue arrestado durante una protesta en contra de las redadas de inmigración aquí en Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Hoy es mi cumpleaños número 48 y jamás pensé que lo pasaría tras las rejas como que si fuera un criminal. ICE se niega a soltarme porque represento un dolor de cabeza para ellos; una piedra en el zapato pues a diario exponía todas las injusticias que los agentes federales cometían en las calles del estado con miembros de nuestra vulnerable comunidad latina. Mi entrega por el trabajo me costó mi libertad y ahora estoy a punto de ser deportado después de más de tres meses en la cárcel. No solo he sido víctima de extorsión, sino también de tortura psicológica, pues me mantuvieron durante 70 días en confinamiento solitario en una pequeña celda donde solo podía salir al sol DOS HORAS al día a tomar aire fresco. Jamás me apagaban la luz y estaba completamente SOLO. Ahí meten a detenidos que son castigados por peleas o por violar las reglas de la cárcel, pero este no fue mi caso. ICE simplemente decidió que ahí merecía estar y punto. Sufrí trastornos de sueño y hasta llegué al punto de desear morirme. Gracias a Dios, la psicóloga de Folkston me ayudó entender que estaba en depresión. Ya casi me expulsan del país y aunque me voy con la frente en alto, pues durante casi 22 años hice las cosas bien, también me voy con el corazón partido por la separación de mi familia. Siento que el gobierno me ha humillado y pisoteado como ha querido, pero perdono a las autoridades por eso. El odio racial les impide vernos como seres humanos a los inmigrantes. Esta amarga experiencia nos ha marcado no solo moral, si no económicamente. Hemos perdido tanto, pero Dios nos sigue sosteniendo con su amor e infinita misericordia. Si es tu voluntad y te nace en tu corazón hacerme un regalo en efectivo por motivo de mi cumpleaños, sería de gran bendición pues ahora más que nunca mi familia lo necesita.
