There’s a common saying that a friend in need is a friend indeed. If you can support your pal through a challenging situation, it shows you’re more than a friend – you’re family.
I met Felipe Cortina in middle school in 1989. We lived in the same neighborhood so we quickly became good friends. To this very day, we and the rest of our friends from our youth continue to get together despite our work schedules and family time.
Felipe is a devoted husband to his wife, Monica, and a father to two beautiful girls; Isabela, 15, and Ivana, 10. Felipe spends most of his free time with his family.
Felipe, in lieu of collecting government benefits, began a new venture as a private driver after years as an Uber driver. He had found success in this field of work. On July 20, 2022, Felipe began his usual work day. Felipe informed us that he began feeling chest pain and was suddenly lightheaded. He thought it was just stress and anxiety that he was going through given that he had just lost his father-in-law to a heart attack two weeks before this incident. Felipe attempted to go to work despite the discomfort. Felipe called his wife, Monica, to inform her about his symptoms and was immediately rushed to the hospital. Felipe was having a heart attack.
After numerous diagnostic studies, Felipe was informed that he was in need of open-heart surgery on an emergency basis given that his arteries had substantial plaque buildup, restricting blood flow to the heart and leading to a heart attack. Felipe’s took place today, August 10, 2022. He is currently in the ICU.
Felipe was not prepared for this dreadful diagnosis nor the costs that would entail treating this condition. Felipe carried emergency insurance and unfortunately, he had no idea that it’s capped far below the cost of the surgery. Felipe needs to come up with 10% of the cost of the surgery and any additional expenses that have accrued since he was admitted. Felipe and the remainder of his wife’s family weeks before this incident decimated his life spendings helping his father-in-law cover the out-of-pocket expenses and medical care that did not fall under his health insurance policy coverage. Felipe, in addition to exhausting his funds, borrowed thousands of dollars from his friends to cover the remaining debt prior to his untimely death of his father in law.
We are attempting to pool enough money to have him cover the deductible and assist his family during the months he will not be able to return to the open labor market.
I, along with Felipe’s closest friends and his lovely wife, Monica, are kindly requesting assistance to ease his anxiety due to the overwhelming debt he will incur as a result of the surgery and post-op care. I am kindly requesting that you assist us to help this unselfish friend in this difficult situation. Remember, every penny counts. Thank you in advance for your help. God bless.
